DIAGONAL — Archers from Diagonal ranging in grade level elementary through high school had quite a performance at the State Shoot held Feb. 25-26 in Des Moines. The Maroons shot on the evening of the first day of competition.
There were awards given out Feb. 26 for three different events and the Maroons earned several.
The first event was the Statewide Invitational League, the second was for the State Shoot that took place over the weekend and the third was the All State Standings.
The Statewide League was a competition throughout the winter. Teams and individuals are allowed to participate in as many shoots as they can but only their top two scores are added together to determine the standings. There is a total possible score of 600 for individuals and 7200 for teams.
Awards are given to the top three teams in the three divisions (elementary, middle school and high school) and to the top five individuals of the three divisions and by gender.
The Diagonal elementary team finished up in second place with 5693 points in their division and the high school team finished in fourth place with 6167, just out of the awards for their division.
Individually there were three shooters receiving awards. Allison Norris placed first with 533 points and Stormie Buchanan was fourth with 509 in the elementary girls division. Layne Ruby finished second with 582 in the middle school boys division.
The next set of awards given out were for the State Shoot. The top three teams and top five individuals were once again recognized, as well as the top female and male overall.
The Maroons elementary team finished second with a season high score of 3000 points. just 40 points behind the first place team from Central City. The high school team finished in fourth place with 3091, only 169 points away from first place Cardinal of Eldon.
Individuals who received awards were Allison Norris, first place with 266 points and Cassidy Lohmann, fifth place with 257, both in the elementary girls division, Kole Paxson was third with 268 points in the elementary boys division, Layne Ruby placed first with 293 points in the middle school boys division and Dillon Davenport was fourth with 284 points in the high school boys division.
Ruby also received a special award that is given to the overall top male and female shooter at each state championship event across the country. The award is a chrome plated Genesis bow that is produced by Mathews Archery exclusively for the top shooters.
The last set of awards was the All State Standings. The scoring for this is figured by adding a shooter or team's league score together with their state shoot score. There is a total possible of 900 points (600 league and 300 state) for individuals and 10800 points (7200 league and 3600 state) possible for teams.
The elementary team finished second with 8693 points, just 382 behind first place Central City. The high school team finished in fourth place with 9258 points, just 610 away from first place Cardinal of Eldon.
There were two Diagonal archers who finished as team captains. They were Allison Norris in the elementary girls division and Layne Ruby in the middle school boys division.
