Throwback Thursday - May 9, 2024

Steve Conner, left, and Joe Kirchoff, both of Creston, proudly display the wild turkeys they shot Sunday in Lucas County. Kirchoff's turkey weighed 24 lbs.and Conners 21 lbs. Each had a beard measuring around 12 inches. Conner was hunting on state land and Kirchoff on a private farm. Their turkeys will rate among the biggest shot this season.

Thursday’s Class 3A state qualifying meet in Norwalk went about as well as planned for Creston’s girls track and field team. The Panthers qualified three individual events and four different relays for the state meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines Thursday through Saturday.

Three employees of Taylor County Secondary Roads were injured Thursday morning after a tire exploded at the Secondary Roads shop in Bedford. According to a Taylor County Sheriff release, emergency crews were dispatched around 11:45 a.m. Thursday, to Taylor County Secondary Roads shop, 505 State St., in Bedford. Three employees were injured when a large tire exploded as they were making repairs.

Out of 16 applicants for the open Union County Board of Supervisors position, nine will receive interviews. ”There’s a lot of good applicants. When you’ve got a lot of good applicants and have to narrow it down to the best pick, that’s difficult,” said Sandy Hysell, Union County auditor and member of the appointment committee. Names of applicants will be released once they have been notified and interviews are scheduled.

The Creston Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors held a ribbon cutting Tuesday night in honor of the renovation project at Easter Foods on Townline Road in Creston.

Adams County Sheriff Merlin Dixon is in good condition today in a Des Moines hospital after his patrol vehicle rolled several times in an accident Thursday night with a driver being pursued on three warrants.

Rick Rice, director of Crossroads Mental Health Center in Creston and Larry Gile, assistant director of special education at Green Hills AEA in Creston, have formed, what appears to be one of the most unique livestock operations in the area, opting to go into the exotic animal business and raise bison.

Creston successfully defended its Class 3A title Thursday at the Raiderette Relays. Then Panthers racked up 97 points, edging Hawkeye 10 Conference rival Clarinda by 3 1/2 points.

Creston boys tennis team came out on the short end of the score once again Thursday, but the Panthers nearly upset Chariton, losing 5-4.

General Telephone Company of the Midwest will be required to refund more than $4.5 million to its Iowa customers, the Iowa Commerce Commission announced today. The commission found that revised telephone rates and charges filed by the firm were unreasonable.

Creston’s mile relay team, Dorothy Loos in the 220-yard hurdles and Jill Christy in the softball throw, will represent Creston for sure in the girls state Class 3A track meet in Des Moines May 21-22, and there may be more.

Creston High School girls and boys were assured of no worse than a tie for the top Hawkeye Eight golf honors here Monday, as they won two important matches from Shenandoah, the boys by a narrow squeeze of 154-157, while the girls won 202-210.

Four automobiles parked in the north part of Creston were damaged in hit and run accidents early today. Accidents occurred in the 700 block of North Elm Street, 500 and 600 block of North Vine Street and the 500 block of North Birch Street.

Dr. Robert D. Benton, state superintendent of public instruction will speak at the Southwestern Community College spring commencement Friday. There are 152 candidates for degrees and diplomas in the class.

Heavy rains soaked all of the Crestonland area in the last 24 hours. Rainfall measured up to unofficial reports of three inches, with 2.74 inches measured at the Creston City Water Plant at Summit Lake, 2.28 inches at the I.S.U. light plant in downtown Creston and 2.36 inches at the weather station at KSIB.

Patricia Lininger, 14, the 1957 Union County spelling champion, won the district spelling contest Thursday afternoon. She won the title over nine other contestants from five counties. She is an eighth grader at the Arispe school.

“Take Mother Out to Dinner” at the Iowana Coffee Shop was advertised in the May 10 publication. A complete dinner from soup through dessert, including potato, salad, vegetable, rolls, beverage and dessert with the main course, was advertised for $1.65 and a children’s portion for $1.00. The Iowana Coffee Shop boasts tablecloth service, good food, expertly served for the same moderate prices.

Marilyn Werner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray H. Werner, Creston, is chairman of open houses for the 1957 Veishea at Iowa State College, where she is a junior majoring in household equipment and education. The Veishea celebration is the largest student-managed festival in the world.
