County sets bid date for road work

With input from county engineer Christian Boehmer, Union County Board of Supervisors scheduled a bid letting for 9:10 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, for road and culvert work for a portion of 110th Street.

About a 3-mile stretch of the road from the Adams-Union county line to Highway 25 will be closed to replace the culvert and related road improvements. The road will have traffic control devices as the road will be closed to through traffic. The project will be funded by borrowing against property tax revenue from the wind turbines in the same area of the county. The county agreed to use turbine tax revenues for such improvements.

A work schedule it not yet known. Because of the Memorial Day holiday May 27, supervisors usually schedule their meetings to Wednesday of weeks with a holiday on a Monday.

Supervisors also scheduled a public hearing for 9:10 a.m. May 20 for a budget amendment. The county has $384,240 in expenses. Of that amount, $288,000 is paying off the remaining amount of the landfill bond. Other expenses include recycling, buildings and ground fees and district court fees.

Roads Superintendent Al Hysell said crews are still removing debris along roads and ditches after the April 26 storm. Crews removed some damaged trees near the intersection of 170th and Two Lakes Drive northwest of Afton. Hysell said the rate of use, the county will have used all its road rock budget in early June. The 2025 fiscal year budget begins July 1.
