Somebody please stop the rain for a while![]() I’m not sure who is in charge of the weather at this point, but a good stretch of dry weather sure would not hurt my feelings and would give my sump pump a little time to relax! June was the third wettest month ever for as long as they have been keeping track, which was way back to the 1880s. July hasn’t started off much better with more than half the days including some rain. Some of the corn fields look more like rice fields. That may be our new cash crop if Mother Nature keeps this up for a while. Movies The free summer movies are upon us with the first movie here in Creston starting Tuesday. The free kids movies will be every Tuesday and Wednesday at the Strand Theatre starting July 13 and 14 and ending on Aug. 3 and 4. There are two showings each day at noon and 2:30 p.m. My favorite of the four movies is “How To Train Your Dragon” which is a fun, animated feature. I remember, back “many moons ago” when I was a kid, we had the neighbor gang going down to the not-free-but-real-cheap summer movie matinee. We got to see some of the good old monster movies like “Godzilla verses the Thing.” Lunch pail My sister came to visit me for the Fourth of July celebration. She had spent some time with my aunt who has been clearing things out of her house. She lives in Fairbury, Neb., and just moved into a home because of busting a hip. She gave my sister my old lunch pail that I used back when I was about 6 years old. The cowboy design was reminiscent of “Rawhide” the old cowboy western. Beside the lunch pail, she sent a bunch of old pictures and everything from a high school graduation announcement to my birth announcement. It was kind of like a little bit of old home week. Gas tax I was reading an article the other day about all the different gas taxes in the United States. Iowa is currently at 22 cents. The lowest are in Alaska at 8 cents and Wyoming at 14 cents. The highest are California at 48.6 cents and Hawaii at 45.1 cents. With any luck hopefully the price of gas will get back under $2.50 a gallon sometime soon. I see the postal service is looking to raise the price of a 44-cent stamp up to 46 cents as of the first of the year. As usual, the postal service lost $3.8 billion this year, and that is even with cutting 40,000 jobs. Without the 2-cent increase the postal service is looking to lose another $7 billion next year, which doesn’t make a lot of sense because of the fact the 2-cent increase will only make up $2.5 billion of the loss. I also read there will be a good chance that Saturday delivery may also disappear next year. We’ll just have to wait and see how that one goes. Cold ones I see McDonald’s will be getting into the smoothie business as of next week. You will have a choice of a strawberry-banana or wild berry smoothie. The list price is $2.29 for a 12-ounce cup or $3.29 for a 22-ounce cup of the new drink. Fireworks Because of the wet weather over the Fourth of July the Creston Fireworks show will be moved to July 31 during the McKinley Park Festival. It should be a great day with tons of activities going on throughout. The day will start off with a kids fishing contest at McKinley Park. Kids up to 16 will have a chance to win prizes and receive a fishing goodie bag and lunch free of charge as part of the event. Lots of new activities have been added to the day and it should be a great time “weather permitting!” Look for more details of the day to come in the Creston News Advertiser.
