Donald Melvin Wittenberg, 39, 408 W. Lucas St., was charged 8:10 p.m. Sunday at the Union County Law Enforcement Center on a Union County warrant for probation violation.

Wittenberg is being held in the Union County Jail awaiting an appearance before the magistrate.

Veronica Lynn George, 34, of Glidden was charged with driving while barred 7:30 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of New York Avenue and Adams Street.

George was released on $2,000 bond.

Todd Edward Kimpson, 37, of Corning was charged noon Sunday at the Union County Law Enforcement Center with violation of a protective order.

Kimpson was released on $300 bond.

Rodney Earl Bell, 48, 220 S. Peterson St., was charged 5:27 p.m. Saturday at the Union County Law Enforcement Center on a Union County warrant for pseudoephedrine purchase violation.

Bell was released on promise to appear.

Michael Francis Overton, 54, 104 N. Stone St., was charged 10 a.m. Saturday at the Union County Law Enforcement Center with assault with a deadly weapon and carrying weapons.

Overton was released on $2,000 bond.

Randy Lee Garrison Jr., 34, 801 W. Adams St., Apt. 2, was charged with driving while barred 8 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Montgomery and Stone streets.

Garrison was released on $2,000 bond.

The headlights on a 1991 Chevrolet pickup and headlights and driver’s side window on a 2002 Kenworth truck were reportedly broken between 3:20 p.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m. Sunday while the vehicles were parked at Burton R. Jones Complex, 801 N. Elm St. The interior of the Chevrolet was also reportedly sprayed with a fire extinguisher, and a portable toilet was tipped over.

Damage estimates were $40 to the Kenworth owned by John Dalson and Sons of Minneapolis, Minn., and $75 to the Chevrolet owned by Creston Community Schools.

The McKinley Park Festival kicked off at 8:30 a.m. Saturday July 31 with a kids fishing contest. More than 150 kids participated in the contest. A bike parade ensued at 1 p.m. The parade was judged and two boys and two girls received new bikes. The Bill Riley Talent Show took place at the bandshell at 2 p.m. First-place contestants advanced to perform at the Iowa State Fair. And at 10 p.m., the Creston Shooters delivered an 18-minute fireworks display.

Starting school on Aug. 23, or earlier, is a good idea.
I agree, it prevents school from lasting too far into June.
I disagree, it is too early, especially if it starts before the end of the Iowa State Fair.
