Despite falling short of its state-tournament goal, it was a record-setting season for the 28-4 Creston softball team.

In beating Glenwood to open regional play and wrap up an 18-0 conference record, the Panthers won their 24th consecutive game.

Even with the 6-0 regional semifinal loss at Winterset, the 2010 Panther squad broke last year's record for winning percentage (.861 at 31-5) and fewest losses. Last year's team topped the 1978 team of 33-6 (.846). This year's winning percentage was .875.

Those accomplishements and a farewell to three senior team members were the highlights of Sunday's team banquet at Creston High School.

Coach Mike McCabe called it an enjoyable season, despite the disappointing regional setback on Winterset's home field. Winterset went on to lose to Chariton in the regional finals, and Chariton claimed third place in the 3A state tournament Friday.

"This core group has not lost back-to-back games in three years," McCabe said. "If you look around the state, there is probably a very short list of team that can say that."

Doubleheader sweeps of runner-up Lewis Central and state-tournament qualifier Harlan helped secure an undefeated conference season.

Starting school on Aug. 23, or earlier, is a good idea.
I agree, it prevents school from lasting too far into June.
I disagree, it is too early, especially if it starts before the end of the Iowa State Fair.
School should be year-round
