School board approves budget cuts

A leaner budget is in the works for Creston Community School District.
The district’s board Monday approved a list of budget cuts proposed by a committee represented by administration, staff and board members. Together, they submitted a list of adjustments that can save approximately $300,000 for the operating budget.
In response to last year’s 10 percent across-the-board cut mandated by Gov. Chet Culver, resulting in $609,000 in lost general-fund revenue, the board had already enacted a tax increase generating $100,328, and made some cutbacks in transportation and program expenses.
Early retirements, including 12 teachers, provided additional savings, as three of those positions were not filled — one each at the elementary, middle and high schools. But, declining enrollment led to even less state revenue for this year’s budget. So, in all, a goal of $1 million in cuts was established.
