Long second at Big 12 Tournament

Long second

NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma freshman Jarrod Patterson, ranked No. 13 nationally, won the Big 12 Championship at 125 pounds with a 5-3 decision over Iowa State's Andrew Long of Creston, ranked No. 5.

Patterson notched a takedown with 1:42 left in the first period then rode out the frame. He added an escape before Long got a takedown with 25 seconds remaining in the second. Patterson (28-9) iced it with a takedown at the 1:21 mark of the third period to get his seventh straight win. Long (23-6) escaped as time expired for the match's final point. The win avenged Patterson's only regular season loss in Big 12 competition.

In the team race, Oklahoma State edged Iowa State for first place, 70.5 points to 69. Oklahoma was third with 64 points.

The NCAA Tournament will be held March 18-20 at the Qwest Center in Omaha. Complete printable brackets will be available on NCAA.com at 6 p.m. today.

Former Diagonal star Bob Ricker is among former coaches and players joining the Iowa High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame at the Boys State Basketball Tournament this week at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Presentations will be made at halftime of the Class 4A game Saturday night. Championship games are shown on KCWI, which broadcasts on channel 23 in the Des Moines area and channel 9 on Mediacom cable television.

When Ricker graduated from Diagonal High School in 1951, he departed as Iowa's second leading all-time career scorer with 1,525 points. He was a four-year starter for Hall of Fame coach Dale Herrington and the Maroons advanced to the substate tournament each of his four season, and to the one-class state tournament in 1949.

Ricker poured in a then state-record 63 points in a 1951 sectional tournament game against Conway. He led the state that year with 701 points. Upon graduation he went into farming and is now retired. He and his wife Lucy currently reside in Mount Ayr.
