Mount Ayr girls advance to state finals

DES MOINES — Mount Ayr girls avenged an earlier defeat by knocking off No. 1-rated Martensdale-St. Marys, 57-48, at the Girls State Basketball Tournament Wednesday night.

Bailey Myer scored 21 points and Jensen Stewart added 14 for the eighth-ranked Raiderettes (26-1), who will take on No. 2 Exira (25-0) for the Class 1A championship 6 p.m. Friday at Wells Fargo Arena.

It will be the first appearance for a Mount Ayr girls basketball team in a state championship game. Exira advanced with a 70-58 semifinal victory over Newell-Fonda.
