'Back to Black'

By KYLE WILSON

DES MOINES — The opinion of Mount Ayr guard Bailey Myer carries some weight. And, after Wednesday’s upset in the Class 1A state semifinals, will continue to do so.

Myer, and other teammates, pleaded, then convinced Mount Ayr coach Thad Streit to go “back to black” against No. 1-ranked Martensdale-St. Marys Wednesday in the Class 1A state semifinals.

Black, in Raiderette language, means man-to-man defense.

Their plea for man defense worked ... for them, and for Streit.

The top-ranked Blue Devils fought to get an open 3-point attempt Wednesday. The 3-pointers they did shoot ... were forced. They frustrated Mackenzie Morrison, Martensdale’s 6-4 center, by limiting her touches. The Raiderette defense was suffocating, especially on the perimeter.

After losing in early February to Martensdale by double digits, that including the loss of a conference championship, the Raiderettes got the best kind of revenge Wednesday — they eliminated the Blue Devils from the state tournament, 57-48.
