Let us vote!

From Mike Lang

Creston

I was pleased to learn Rep. Reasoner had introduced a bill to bring the proposed marriage amendment to the floor of the House of Representatives for debate. As you know, this is a proposal to let the people of the state of Iowa vote to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman. The proposed bill, if passed in two consecutive sessions of the Legislature, can go before the voters of Iowa and if approved will amend the State Constitution. I was disappointed on Jan. 30, during the legislative coffee, with Rep. Reasoner’s apparent lack of enthusiasm and support for the bill he introduced.

His action Feb. 9 leaves me bewildered. Rep. Reasoner voted against allowing this issue to be brought to the House floor for debate. This gives the impression that Rep. Reasoner was being disingenuous by giving the false impression that he favored debate when he really wanted to prevent debate.

On Feb. 9, members of the House of Representatives used a perfectly legal parliamentary procedure in an attempt to bring the bill up for debate. I was amazed when Rep. Reasoner voted with the Democratic Party against his own bill.

Please give us a straight answer Rep. Reasoner. Why won’t you let the people decide this very important issue? Let us vote!
