Accident east of Greenfield claims one life, seriously injures another

One person died and another was injured as the result of a crash east of Greenfield in Adair County Thursday morning.

According to a report from the Iowa State Patrol, Darrell Smith, 47, of Winterset died in the crash that occured on Highway 92 east of Greenfield at approximately 6:37 a.m.

The report says that a 2008 Chevy pickup driven by Smith was westbound near Pinewood Avenue, when for unknown reasons, his vehicle crossed into the eastbound lane and was struck head on by a 2003 International truck registered by Five Star Trucking, LLC. The Truck was driven by Jeremy Houck, 44, of Corning, who was injured.

After the collision, the pickup spun around into the westbound lane and came to rest facing east. The semi came to rest in the south ditch. Smith died from his injuries at the scene. Houck was seriously injured and airlifted by LifeFlight to Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Both men were wearing their seatbelts.

The Adair County Sheriff's Office, Adair County Ambulance and Greenfield Fire Department assisted the Iowa State Patrol at the scene.
