Potions for Humanity workshop (Jan. 25)

Jonny Stax and Creston Community High's GSA invite the community on a journey to explore the magical world of potion-making 10 a.m. Jan. 25 at Create Creston, 104 N. Maple St. Using the element of storytelling, participants find their own magic as they create potions to help make the world a more manageable place for everyone in it.
Stax serves as speaker, creative coach, and social equity strategist, manifesting more creative and JEDI (just, equitable, diverse, inclusive) worlds. Stax has opened for Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, and Eric Clapton and is currently developing a traveling potion show. This event is open to all ages by free will donation.

CCHS Large Group Speech Contest at CCHS (Jan. 25)

The Creston Speech Team cordially invites the community to District Large Group Speech Contest to watch a day of fun-filled entertainment performed by Creston as well as other Southwest Iowa high schools. The action runs from 8 to 3 p.m. and for a $3 donation at the door, you can watch One-Act Plays, Short Films, Musical Theatres, TV News, Choral Readings, Group Improvisations, and more! Food will be available to purchase in the cafeteria. The proceeds from the door and concessions go right back into the Creston Speech Team program.

15th Annual 9-Pin Bowling Tournament (Jan. 25)

Get signed up for this fun event supporting McKinley Park. The fee for each 5-person team is $150. All proceeds from this event support the restoration of McKinley Park. Casino Night for Creston Boosters (Feb. 1)

Creston Boosters is hosting a Casino Night starting at 5 p.m. Feb. 1 at Creston Elks Lodge. Admission is $40 and includes dinner and $200 in “funny money.” Visit Creston Boosters on Facebook for more information.

Precinct caucus hosted by Union County Iowa Republicans (Feb. 3)

Precinct Caucus is the first event in deciding delegates and representatives from the party for deciding its nominees and party platform. The event is 7 p.m. Feb. 3. Five Creston precincts will meet at Creston Community Middle School. Precincts in Afton, Arispe and Lorimor will meet at the Afton Community Center. The Homestead Pickers perform in Mount Ayr (Feb. 8)

The Homestead Pickers are performers from Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri, who will be performing 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Feb. 8 in the Mount Ayr High School Auditorium at 1001 E. Columbus St. in Mount Ayr. The band performs bluegrass, gospel, country and comedy with instruments including guitars, fiddles, banjos and harmonicas. Understanding dementia (Feb. 18 and March 24)

Care Initiatives Hospice will offer a three-part series for family members and caregivers to aid in understanding dementia. The series will be presented by Susan Finehout, Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse at Greenfield Rehabilitation and Health Care Center Assisted Living in Greenfield. The sessions will be held at 2 p.m. and the public is invited to attend. Feb. 18th session is entitled “Caring for Others – Caring for Yourself.” The final session, “Hospice Support: When is it Time?” is scheduled for March 24.
