Fred joined the United States Air Force Dec. 10, 1953, and served his country during the Korean conflict. He was honorably discharged Oct. 12, 1957.

Fred married Katherine Fay Bennett Aug. 17, 1958, at Arispe Methodist Church. Two children blessed this union; Colleen and Barry. Fred was a farmer raising cattle and hogs, and grew hay, soybeans and corn. He owned 320 acres, but at the height of his operating days farmed up to two-thousand acres. When his children were young Fred was an active 4-H leader. He also served as a township trustee. In 2012 he and Katherine moved to an acreage outside of Osceola. Fred moved to an assisted living facility in Urbandale in 2017 due to his declining health.

Fred was a member of the Cattlemen’s Association and the Iowa Pork Producers. He was a member of the American Legion and a lifetime member of the V.F.W. He enjoyed time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, and liked to keep up on Iowa Hawkeye sports.

Left to cherish Fred’s memory is his daughter, Colleen Peterson of Earlham; son, Barry Werner of Prescott; grandchildren: Annette Werner of Afton, Jerry Werner of Earlham and Katherine Peterson (fiance Tyler Shield) of Earlham; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Sharon Brown and husband Rufus of Neosho, Missouri; brother, Paul Werner and wife Dixie of Queen Creek, Arizona; along with many other relatives and friends.
