Area wrestling roundup: Southwest Valley wrestles twice, Bedford/Lenox goes out of state

MA, SWV battle at Van Meter

VAN METER – Southwest Valley and Mount Ayr hit the mat Tuesday night in Van Meter, squaring off against Winterset and Van Meter along with each other.

Van Meter rolled over SWV, winning 76-6.

Seven forfeits were the difference between the Timberwolves and the Bulldogs. Tallen Myers (220) was the one match win for the Timberwolves, pinning Kyler Young in 1:26.

Against Winterset the Timberwolves again struggled, losing 78-6 in a match where they forfeited seven matches.

Myers picked up another match win by pin, taking down Henry Tromba in 1:42, for the lone six points earned by SWV.

Mount Ayr topped Southwest Valley 45-30, winning over the Pride of Iowa Conference foe.

The Raiders were on the winning end of six matches by forfeit while SWV was on the winning end of two.

Talal Rahahleh (160) and Andi Gonzales (170) had match wins, with Rahahleh taking down Steve Rodriques in 1:09 and Gonzales winning by decision 14-8 over Kolton Schutt.

Myers and Anthony Daffer (285) had wins by pin, finishing in 0:48 and 3:04, respectively. Marshall Knapp also had a match pin in 1:44.

For Mount Ayr, the Raiders lost to Van Meter 57-21.

Drew Ehlen (110) had the fastest pin of the match for the Raiders at 0:37. At 120, Bryce Shaha won 5-0 by decision and Class 1A 138 No. 9 Trae Ehlen (138) pinned Korbin Barack in 1:32 for six points.

Donovan Morales (285) also had a match victory, winning over Kyler Young in 3:01.

The Raiders then took on Winterset, dropping the dual 52-23.

Winterset was successful through much of the middle weights, not dropping points from 126 through 195. Drew Ehlen, Jarrett Webb (113) and Shaha each had matches end by fall (Shaha’s in a 19-4 technical fall) as core contributors to the team score.

Morales was again successful by pin, taking down Winterset’s Tromba in 1:14.

Panorama meet

PANORAMA – Southwest Valley and East Union took on Panorama and Martensdale-St. Marys in a triangular Thursday night (Jan. 16).

Southwest Valley came away with a loss to Martensdale, falling 48-36.

SWV and Martensdale each had four matches end in forfeit in their favor. In matches where wrestlers from both sides faced off, Southwest Valley was successful twice – A pin at 195 from Dalton Calkins on Sean Miklus in 3:12 and a pin at 160 from Mathew Johnson on Grant Ballard in 0:43.

Against Panorama, the Timberwolves lost 54-24. Southwest Valley was unable to get points from 120 to 182, dropping matches in a combination of forfeits and by pin.

Calkins and Myers both had match pins, each coming at 2:37. Daffer picked up six points by forfeit.

On the lightweight end, Adyson Lundquist (106) had a pin victory over Jaime Thorpe in 3:49.

East Union lost to Southwest Valley 48-30.

All points scored came from a forfeit or a match pin with six ending by fall and seven being a no contest.

SWV’s Steve Rodriques (152), Johnston, Kaden Jacobs (182) and Myers each had pins, all in 1:23 or less. East Union’s Brant Looney (170) and DJ Islas (106) had pins also, acting as the only wins for the Eagles.

The rest of the night for East Union saw them lose to Panorama 54-10 and Martensdale-St. Marys 48-30.

Islas and Looney had the contributing points for EU against Panorama. Islas took down his opponent in 1:06 and Looney won by majority decision 13-4.

Against Martensdale, Bryson Raney (160) and Islas each had wins by pin, ending in 0:26 and 2:47, respectively.

Eagles, Tigers at East Mills

MALVERN – Bedford/Lenox and East Union hit the mat in a triangular against East Mills, Clarinda and each other Tuesday.

East Union beat Clarinda Academy 30-18. Only one match took place where both sides presented a wrestler – at 126, EU’s Stephens took down Mason Schroeder in 1:54 for a pin.

There were four forfeits in favor of EU and three in favor of Clarinda Academy. In total, six double forfeits helped push the score.

East Mills rolled over East Union 60-6. Stephens was the only point scorer for the Eagles, taking down Brodyn Wray in 1:33. Nine matches ended by forfeit or double forfeit.

EU dropped its third match of the night to Bedford/Lenox, losing 60-6 to the Pride of Iowa Conference foe.

Islas took down Mizael Gomez right before the third period whistle at 5:58 for the lone six points for East Union. Chance Valenzuela (120), Terrence Sheley (132), Brayden Daly (145) and Andrew Kennan (160) had wins for Bedford/Lenox, each ending by pin.

The Tigers beat East Mills 48-33, getting four wins by pin. Valenzuela, Talon Riedel (138), Kennan and Class 1A 170 No. 4 Drew Venteicher (170) each had pins in the win.

Ventiecher’s match went the longest, going 4:53 while Valenzuela took down his opponent in 1:05.

Clarinda Academy was rolled by Bedford/Lenox 63-6 with the Tigers taking the only three matches where they wrestled.

Sheley (by pin, 5:22), Whipple (decision 7-1) and Valenzuela (pin, 1:04) each had wins. Bedford/Lenox was on the winning end of eight forfeits with two double forfeits.

Mid-Buchanan Tournament

FAUCETT, Mo. – Bedford/Lenox took part in the Mid Buchanan Tournament in Missouri Saturday.

The Tigers had four wrestlers place at the tournament, with one going home as the class champion and another finishing as the runner up.

Drew Venteicher (170) took first in the class, taking down Gabe Hummer of Savannah in an 8-0 majority decision. Venteicher had a technical fall and a quick pin before capping his tourney off with a final win.

Terrence Sheley finished second, falling in the final to Tim Speer of Mid-Buchanan in 2:33. Sheley had a bye before taking down Gallatin’s Reggie Arnold in 0:48, leading him into the final.

At 152, Jake Cox battled back to finish third. Cox fell in the semi-finals to finalist Rodell Sperry of Gallatin. Cox then took down Isaiah Myers by fall to earn the third place match to beat Centerville’s Anthony Grumblatt.

Isaac Grundman won the 138B bracket as a JV wrestler, taking down Maysville’s Luke Mason in a 7-0 decision.
