GFWC/Iowa Elzevir Reading Circle

Celebrating the annual anniversary luncheon of GFWC/Iowa Elzevir Reading Circle was an appropriate way for members to begin 2020 together. Gathering at Adams Street Espresso on Jan. 10, members had lunch before the president called the meeting to order at 12:40 p.m. Members answered roll call by recalling New Year’s Resolutions. Minutes of the December meeting were read and approved. The treasurer’s report was given and approved.

A “Save the Date” GFWC anniversary party invitation from Progressive Chautauqua Study Circle Club was read. It will be held Tuesday, March 10 at Summit House, 509 N. Maple St., Creston.

Volunteer hours were submitted to the president, Linda Topliff. She will forward them on to GFWC. Mary Stewart’s “Club Collect” was recited. Motion to adjourn meeting was made by Barb Thomsen, seconded by Jean Davis. Motion passed.

Because of the ice storm developing, the program was postponed until another time. The next meeting will be held 1:30 p.m., Feb. 14 at the home of Carol Brentnall.

Greater Regional Health Auxiliary Gift Shop

Greater Regional Health Auxiliary Gift Shop met Jan. 13. After approving the agenda and financial report for the GRH Auxiliary Gift Shop, Jordan, Lois, Joan and Rhonda reviewed current vendor books and discussed future activities. It was decided not to schedule meetings with Quality Hill and PB&J at this time.

° Feb. 18 Ganz and CBK, 10 a.m.

Jan 13 meeting: Lois called the meeting to order with Jordan, Tammy, Linda, Martha, Marcia, Barb, Joan and Rhonda in attendance. The agenda, minutes and financial reports were all approved. Tammy suggested that the auxiliary might want to supply trolley tickets for those who have consultation meetings scheduled with Kim Frain, but are struggling with transportation to those meetings. Jordan will check on some provisions that might already be in place. He will contact Kim and Jessica.

The annual membership drive will be headed by Martha and Marcia in March. It will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on two days which will be determined later.

Applications for the annual GRH Auxiliary Healthcare scholarships will be sent soon to area high schools, SWCC and current GRH employees. Those present approved sending $1,000 to the Iowa Hospital Education and Research Foundation in support of that scholarship fund.

It was announced that due to pending construction in the MAP area, the collective goods sale in March has been moved to the DV Richardson room. The $5 jewelry sale slated for April has been cancelled.

During the administrator’s report, Monte stated that the MAP entrance will be closed starting Feb. 1 and will remain closed for the duration of the construction in that area. The south entrance will be utilized during this time. The large elevator will still be available as will the steps to the medical clinic. They hope to be finished with the construction in June. The current MAP volunteer desk will be unavailable for use. Kayla, Matt and Jordan are collaborating on a set up for the information desk volunteers. Monte also announced the remodel project for Rehab and Urgent Care should be completed by April 1. Urgent Care should be completed by April 1. These departments are slated to move to the top of the ramp. New providers being added to the GRH family are Janice Taylor (rural health serving the Mount Ayr, Corning and Lenox clinics), Laura Hagen (Urgent Care) and Erik Larson (resident podiatrist).

Friends of the Library Board

Friends of the Library board met on Jan. 20 with the following members present: Cynthia Blakeley, Judy Hoakison, Jane King, Sarah King, Bunny Norton, Caprial Norton, Kay Raymond, Julie Schieffer and Director David Hargrove. The agenda was approved and the minutes were approved and corrected. Director Hargrove said the carpet in the children’s room is installed. There will be a grand re-opening scheduled in the near future, details to be announced. There will be computer skills classes on offer for the next five months. Check them out at the library. David is available to tutor almost any Wednesday between 1 and 3 p.m. Three bills were presented for the Valentine cookie bouquets. Correspondence was received from Chris Fredricksen and the Travis Street family. The Valentine cookie bouquets were discussed. Orders will be taken at the library. The last day to order is Feb. 7. Look for order forms in the Creston News Advertiser. Delivery for orders in Creston’s city limits will be by 5 p.m. Friday, (Valentine’s Day), Feb. 14. The next meeting will be 5 p.m. Feb. 17 in the library.

Kiwanis Club

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 21 at Pizza Ranch. 23 members and one guest attended. President Bob Miller presided, Jim Nelson did the prayer and Randy Ringsdorf was the finemaster.

Planning has begun for the annual Pancake Day fundraiser for Kiwanis this spring.

The program was Matt Ott of Mid American Energy, who is a wind project engineer. He discussed the Wind Turbine programs in Iowa and updated the club about the Southern Hill project for Adams and Union Counties. Iowa is ranked No. 2 in the United States for providing wind energy because of the strong wind resources in the western part of the state. In 2016 wind provided 35 percent of the total electricity in the state.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

The Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met Wednesday, Jan. 22. The canasta winners were: Linda Clark, first; Janice Munstermann, second; Kris Kerrigan, third. The winner of the door prize was Joan Chubick. The next meeting for cards and chatter will be Jan. 29, 2020, and the hostess will be Barb Bills.
