Boys basketball roundup: Mount Ayr stays perfect, East Union rolls over O-M

Mount Ayr 76, Lenox 26

MOUNT AYR – The Class 1A No. 9 Raiders made it 12 in a row Tuesday night, beating Lenox by 50 in a 76-26 conference win.

Mount Ayr jumped out ahead with a 33-5 first quarter and continued to roll until the final buzzer sounded.

Isaac Grose finished the night with seven. Dawson Frost, who scored his 1,000th career point, finished with 15 points and Cayden Lambert put up 12 points with three 3-pointers.

Martensdale-St. Marys 90, East Union 33

AFTON ­ Martensdale-St. Marys had everything working for them Tuesday night in Afton, rolling over the Eagles in a 90-33 win.

The Eagles played catch up from the beginning, with a deficit amounting to 43-16 at halftime. Martensdale-St. Marys rolled in the second half, putting up 47 points in the final two frames.

Nodaway Valley 60, Southwest Valley 25

GREENFIELD – Nodaway Valley got back in the win column Tuesday night, beating Southwest Valley 60-25.

SWV kept things close in the first half, trailing by three points at halftime, 17-14. Nodaway Valley put things together to open the second half with 25 points in the third quarter and ending with 18 points to take a commanding lead.

Toby Bower scored 28 points to lead the Wolverines. Clay Hohertz and Joshua Baudler put up 11 and 10 points, respectively, and grabbed eight rebounds each.

East Union 70, Orient-Macksburg 33

AFTON – East Union rolled past Orient-Macksburg to pick up its first win of the season Monday night.

The Eagles took the lead with a 40-point explosion in the first half while holding O-M to 17 points. East Union kept things going in the second half, scoring 30 points.

Cale Ecklund put up 26 points for the Eagles. Kaden Kirkland and Scott Driskill were the other double-digit scorers for EU with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

For O-M, Blake Thompson scored 14 points and Derek Gross put up 10.

Mount Ayr 77, Murray 63

MOUNT AYR – Mount Ayr beat a pesky Murray team Monday night, holding off the Mustangs for a 77-63 win.

Behind 22-6 after the first quarter, Murray put up 23 points to trail 44-39 at halftime. A 26-12 third quarter gave the Raiders some breathing room. Mount Ayr needed it, scoring seven points in the fourth while Murray tried to rally late with 23 points of its own.

Dawson Frost scored 23 points with 10 rebounds for the Raiders to account for a double-double. Cayden Lambert scored 15 with four assists and two steals.

Jace Rodecker and Reece Held put up 16 and 15 points, respectively. Held also grabbed nine boards for the Mustangs.

Panorama 62, Nodaway Valley 59

GREENFIELD – Nodaway Valley had a three-game winning streak snapped Monday night, losing to Panorama 62-59.

NV and Panorama kept things close, as the Wolverines stayed steady, scoring 13 and 10 points in the first and second quarters, respectively, to trail 26-23 at halftime.

After trading leads in the third and fourth quarters, Panorama escaped with a win.

Toby Bower scored 24 points. Tyler Vandewater put up 19 and accounted for three steals to tie the team lead with Joshua Baudler.

Nodaway Valley 67, East Union 21

GREENFIELD – Nodaway Valley beat East Union Thursday night, winning 67-21 over the Eagles.

The Wolverines pulled ahead by outscoring the Eagles by seven and 15 in the first and second quarters, respectively. NV’s smothering defense kept East Union’s offense in single digits for each quarter, including a second half where four points were scored in the third and fourth quarters each.

Clay Hohertz was the points leaders for the boys with 19 points, shooting 7 of 17 from the field. Toby Bower was next in the box score with 16 points, shooting 50% (7 of 14) from the field.

Josh Baudler and Mason Menefee scored 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Bower and Baudler both led in rebounds, each picking seven off the glass. Baudler had five assists and seven steals for the team lead.

Melcher-Dallas 79, Orient-Macksburg 32

MELCHER-DALLAS – Melcher-Dallas overpowered Orient-Macksburg in its 79-32 win Thursday night.

Orient-Macksburg allowed 46 points in the first half, trailing the Saints 46-17 at halftime. A slow 15-point second half made things difficult for the Bulldogs with Melcher-Dallas putting up 33 points.

Derek Gross scored 11 points and Tyson Ross grabbed eight rebounds for O-M.

Martensdale-St. Marys 80, Lenox 36

MARTENSDALE – Martensdale-St. Marys rolled through Lenox Thursday night in an 80-36 loss for the Tigers.

Lenox fell behind the Saints in the first half and never recovered. The Tigers offense struggled to put up points in the second half, scoring 13 total points in the final two frames.

Samson Adams scored 12 points. Adams and Colton Vieux knocked down two 3-pointers each.

Stanton 68, Southwest Valley 49

VILLISCA – Southwest Valley fell behind early against Stanton and was unable to pull out a win Thursday night in a 68-49 score.

A 19-6 first quarter put Stanton ahead, making it a game of catchup for the Timberwolves in the loss.

The Timberwolves were led in scoring by Blaine Venteicher, scoring 12 points. Tucker Tepoel led in rebounds with eight. Venteicher and Tepoel each had three steals.

Tyler Pearson had 11 points and Adam Harris had nine points on 4 of 13 shooting.
