MOUNT AYR – Nodaway Valley bowling opened its season Monday night against Pride of Iowa opponent Mount Ayr with both teams walking away with victories.

The Wolverine girls scored 1,316 across both games, with the Baker round of 645 bringing the score up to 1,961. Abby Christensen and Caidynce Schwartz anchored NV with scores of 3019 and 322, respectively.

Mount Ayr’s girls team was led by Kaitlyn Dolecheck’s score of 238 (101, 137). The Raiders totaled 1,156 pins with a Baker round bringing them to 1,874 for the winning figure.

On the boys’ end, NV was led by Mattew Mangels’ score of 260. Trent McIntosh was the other Wolverine boy to throw into the 200s with 204. In total, Nodaway Valley rolled a 1,047 that was paired with a Baker total of 588 for a 1,635 pin total.

The Raiders bested NV’s total with a score of 1,852 (1,202 first round with a 650 Baker). Michael Sluyrer threw a 306 and Darrian Holmes threw a 295.

With it being the season opener for the Wolverines, the expectations were open with the first meaningful frames of the season being logged Monday night.

“What they did, I was really proud of,” said NV head coach Phyllis Sackett. “For the season opener, I didn’t really have too many expectations because most of the kids were coming back from last year. I knew what they were going to do and were pretty much on track for what I thought they were going to do for the first night.”

However, the open expectations didn’t excuse them from the need to be better in the later stages of the match. In the Baker round, Sackett said the team needs to step up from its performance Monday going forward.

“We have to work on Baker (rounds),” said Sackett. “Our Bakers were not great tonight and I knew that they probably wouldn’t be, but the individual games I was really happy with what they did.”

Sackett said returner Hunter Ellis struggled on the lanes, throwing a 198, and hopes he will rebound for tomorrows home meet.

Mount Ayr head coach Mike Zarr was underwhelmed with the final scores from his team Monday.

“I thought we could have done a little better than what we did,” said Zarr. “We played a tough team in Clarinda last week. Our boys got beat by 1,000 pins (last week), ... my girls are still pretty young and we’re learning and doing a pretty good job.”

Zarr feels the Raiderettes team will rely on the veteran leadership and pinseeking abilities of Dolecheck this season. He also feels there’s still points of focus for the boys in terms of getting better.

“She’s going to be major. If Kaitlyn has a bad game, we’re in trouble,” said Zarr. “(The boys) have to listen, learn and we’ve got to grow up.”

UP NEXT – The Raiderettes will bowl this Friday at Centerville with a scheduled start time of 3 p.m. Nodaway Valley will hit the lanes today (Tuesday) at Greenfield Bowl against West Central Valley starting at 4 p.m.
