Area girls basketball roundup: SWV is 'for real'

Moulton-Udell 58, Diagonal 49

MOULTON – Diagonal (1-4) fell 58-49 to Moulton-Udell (3-0) Friday night suffering its third consecutive loss.

The Maroonettes fell behind early after Moulton-Udell put up 18 points in the first quarter. The Eagles never trailed after taking the early lead 18-11 at the end of the first.

It wasn’t Diagonal’s offense that slowed it down. At halftime, the Maroonettes had 21 points, but it wasn’t enough to stop Moulton-Udell’s attack. Trailing 40-21 at halftime, Diagonal couldn’t find a way to stop the Eagles.

Chelsey Boettcher led Moulton-Udell with 20 points. Malorie Probasco scored 14 points and Jessica King rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points.

In the second half, Anna Newton led Diagonal with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Erin Sobotka joined Newton in double-digits with 16.

Ultimately, the Maroonettes fell after allowing a 15 points third quarter and 13 point fourth quarter, ending in a 58-49 loss.

Central Decatur 65, East Union 23

LEON – Central Decatur (2-1) took care of business Friday night with a 65-23 win over East Union (1-1).

With an early lead, the defense was the main strength for the Cardinals as they held East Union to two points in the first quarter and four points in the second quarter. Central Decatur held a 32-6 lead at halftime and never let up.

It wasn’t until the fourth quarter, when East Union scored 10 points, that the Cardinals allowed double-digit scoring in the game.

Central Decatur was led, offensively, by Alaina Applegate with 17 points and 12 rebounds, to account for a double-double. Riley Bell put up 13 points for the Cardinals in their win.

East Union’s Grace Nixon put up eight points with Kaylin Lack following closely with six points.

Mount Ayr 59, Southwest Valley 44

MOUNT AYR – In a tightly contested first half, Mount Ayr (2-1) was able to keep Southwest Valley (2-1) at bay during its 59-44 win Friday night.

The first half was tight as Mount Ayr put up 33 points in the first half. SWV responded with 28 points of their own to keep the game within striking distance.

In the fourth quarter, Mount Ayr made enough of a run to keep SWV off their backs and finish with a 59-44 win.

Sam Stewart led the Raiderettes with 28 points. Maddie Stewart followed suit with 11 points of her own.

“We did a lot of nice things tonight. We played well in spurts,” said Mount Ayr head coach That Streit. “Our defense created a lot of havoc and we did a good job of adjusting our defense as the game progressed.”

Rylee Jacobs led SWV in scoring with 16 points. Jentry Schafer led the team in rebounds with 13.

“This was our early test in the season to see if we belong as potential contenders in the Pride of Iowa Conference,” Southwest Valley head coach Michael Webb said. “We may not have won but I believe we show we are for real.”

Nodaway Valley 66, Grand View Christian 44

GREENFIELD – Nodaway Valley (3-0) was able to pick up its third win of the season at home against Grand View Christian (2-3) in a 65-44 contest.

The Wolverines exploded with a 26 point first quarter to take a 15 point lead at the end of the first quarter. It was all Nodaway Valley after that point. Never letting up, the Wolverines went on to put up double-digit points in all but the second quarter, scoring nine.

Maddax DeVault led the team with 20 points. Alyssa Davis scored 17 points and 11 rebounds, to grab a double-double. Reagan Weinheimer followed with 14 points of her own.

Lenox 33, Bedford 26

BEDFORD – Lenox (3-0) was able to sneak its way past Bedford (2-2) in a low scoring 33-26 game.

In a game where it was a struggle to score, Lenox put up 16 points in the first half to take a 16-10 lead. The Tigers were consistent scoring eight points in each quarter.

To start the second half, Lenox struggled to score and allowed Bedford back in the game after a 9-3 start. With the game tied at 19, Lenox was able to pull away with the most points scored in a quarter all night, 14.

Leading the Tigers was Kambrie Michel, who scored 11 points. Jynessa Cox scored nine points and Cassidy Nelson put up eight points while grabbing 11 rebounds.

Murray 39, Twin Cedars 29

MURRAY – Murray (1-2) won its first conference game at home against Twin Cedars 39-29 Friday night.

Murray’s defense played strong in the first quarter allowing two points. The offense put up eight points before Twin Cedars came back in the second quarter. A 9-9 second quarter put the game at 17-11 during halftime.

The Lady Mustangs were able to continue the scoring up enough in the second half to get past Twin Cedars on a 22-18 second half charge.

Kinzee Eggers led the the team in scoring with 12 points on 5 of 9 shooting. Destiny Ashby followed suit with double-digits of her own in a 10 point performance.

“(We) cut down on a few T/O’s and shot the ball a little better this evening,” Murray head coach Jerry Shields said.

Seymour 52, Orient-Macksburg 45

ORIENT – Orient-Macksburg (1-2) dropped a home game 52-45 Friday night against Seymour.

It was a close game for the Bulldogs. Ultimately, Orient-Macksburg couldn’t find a way to win late in the game which resulted in its second loss of the season.

ORIENT – Orient-Macksburg (1-3) dropped back-to-back home games in as many days with a heartbreaking 46-45 loss to Moulton-Odell Saturday.
