Local artist Haley Harrigan’s work is on display in Creston:Arts gallery in the restored depot throughout the month of December.

“The depot gallery has a different show each month,” said Brian Zachary of Creston:Arts. “The gallery in general is there to provide a space for the artists of Creston so that they can show their skills.”

Harrigan moved to Creston from California over two years ago. She is a self-taught artist who currently paints in a style known as pointillism — a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of color are applied in patterns to form an image.

“For me, painting is a form of self-awareness,” said Harrigan. “It gives me the ability to work through negative emotions and the problems of life.”

Her pieces include painted rocks, Christmas ornaments, canvas and wall hangings. All pieces on display at the gallery are currently for sale.

“I paint every day for the joy of painting,” said Harrigan. “It’s a big part of my life. Let’s just say I’d go crazy if I couldn’t.”

Harrigan will be present at the gallery Thursday before the Lighted Christmas Parade. Harrigan will also be attending the First Friday event — a reception held to give the month’s chosen artist or artists the opportunity to meet with the public and be recognized for their work while also attracting people to uptown Creston.

“We want it to be a thing where we draw people uptown,” said Zachary. “They come uptown, see some art and then hopefully do some other things.

The gallery is open to the public 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day except Sunday. The First Friday reception will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the depot gallery.
