Area girls basketball roundup: Lenox wins low scoring contest, Maroonettes roll

Lenox 36, Clarinda 30

CLARINDA – Lenox girls picked up its first win of the season Tuesday night, winning a close low-scoring battle over Clarinda 36-30.

Lenox scored its most points in the first quarter, 14, before not scoring more than eight in the second, third and fourth quarters. Clarinda didn’t score double digits until the fourth quarter when it scored 10.

Jordan England was the leader in points with 12. She picked up 26 rebounds, 19 off the defensive glass, and added two steals and a block.

McKinna Hogan scored 11 points, going 3-for-8 from 3-point range. She had six rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Brooklynn Ecklin also had two steals and two blocks with four rebounds.

TJ Stoaks, Lenox’s leading scorer from the 2018-19 season, has been sidelined with a knee injury for the first few weeks of the girls’ basketball season. Her expected time for a return will be late December, according to Lenox head coach Jesse Cox.

Diagonal 48, Mormon Trail 29

GARDEN GROVE – The Maroonettes rolled past Mormon Trail Tuesday night, picking up a 48-29 win on the road.

Diagonal outscored Mormon Trail in every quarter en route to the 19-point win.

Erin Sobotka scored a team leading 18 points in the win, going 5 of 13 from 3-point range. She had five assists and six steals, both team-high.

Anna Newton pitched in 10 points while Alaina Whittington and Taylor Lumbard had nine points each.

Lumbard posted a team-high nine rebounds with Newton and Whittington pulling in seven.

Stanton 60, Diagonal 31

STANTON – Diagonal lost its season opener to Stanton Friday, Nov. 22, in a 60-31 game.

Stanton gained separation from Diagonal on a scoreless second quarter for the Maroonettes. Entering halftime it was 26-8 with Diagonal trailing.

Lumbard had 12 points, the high for the Maroonettes. Whittington had eight rebounds while Sobotka had five steals and five rebounds.

Diagonal went 6 of 17 from three with Lumbard (two), Newton, Sobotka, Tybee Plowman and Kerrigan Mobley each hitting a 3-pointer.
