Middle school basketball roundup

Nodaway Valley got their middle school basketball season underway last week.

Seventh grade boys

The seventh grade boys opened up with a heartbreaking, 24-23 loss to MSTM.

Paul Berg led the way for the Wolverines with seven points and four rebounds. Christian Putney and Eli Harris were next in line with five points apiece.

Eighth grade boys

NV’s eighth grade team won their first game against MSTM, 31-25.

“A good first game,” said Coach Dan Jameson. “It would be nice to get more players involved in the scoring column.There is still a lot of room for improvement.”

Dawson Nelson led the way for the Wolverines with 17 points and four rebounds. Tristan Randol had 12 points and eight boards. Carmine Shaw rounded out the scoring with two points.Zach Christie had seven rebounds.

NV came up with a 39-28 win against SW Valley on Nov. 21.

“We came out very aggressive on defense and moved the ball well on offense, trying to get a good shot,” Jameson said. “We showed nice patience and took pretty good care of the ball. It was a nice game against an athletic team.”

The game went back-and-forth in the first quarter, with three lead changes and two ties. A put back off the glass by Randol gave NV a 6-4 lead after one quarter of play.

After the Timberwolves tied the game up at 6-6, Nelson drained a three to give NV the lead for good at 9-6. The lead extended to six midway through the second quarter, on a nice assist from Cohen Bond to Randol, to make it 17-11.

The Wolverines continued to hit from the outside, with Nelson and Jacob Mangels hitting from beyond the arc on several occasions.

Nelson led NV with 19 points, followed by Randol with 10 points. Randol also had nine rebounds. Mangels finished with six points, with Shaw and Berg rounding out things with two points each. Shaw also finished with six steals.
