Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

The Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met on Nov. 13. The canasta winners were Linda Clark first, Sharon Gile second, and Wanda Nash third.

Winner of the door prize was Jay Sealey. The next meeting for cards and chatter will be Nov. 20 and the hostess will be Wanda Nash.

St. John’s Evening Fellowship

St. John’s Evening Fellowship met Nov. 11. Joan Chubick gave devotions and collected the Least Coin. Tammy Willets conducted the business meeting. Peggy Erskine gave the card report and discussed Thanksgiving cards to be sent. Plans for the group’s annual Christmas party was finalized. Dec. 9 is the date. It will be potluck and everyone is to bring a $10 gift card for the exchange. The party will start at 5 p.m. in the parish hall. Thanksgiving baskets to be given to families was discussed by the group. The cur ch members are donating food and the turkeys will be donated. Any items that are needed to fill in will be purchased from the church account. The trivia that are needed to fill in will be purchased from the church account. The trivia question was given and prize was won by Peggy Erskine. Jeannie made a motion to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Peggy. Refreshments will be served.

VFW Post 1797

VFW post 1797 met Nov. 12 at the Elks Club in Creston. Sixteen members and quests were present for the dinner.

Commander O’Daniels called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. with seven members present.

The post draped the Charter for Veterans: Bud Craig, Robert Garner and Bill Reed. Service officers report: community service 155 hours and 89 hospital hours, and Honor Guard 52 hours for a total of 296 hours. We also traveled 307 miles for veterans.

Minutes and QM reports were read and approved.

In old business; Bob Jungst led the 2019 Homecoming Parade on Oct. 11. Signage at the ball field has been partially completed. The post conducted Poppy Days Nov. 9.

In new business, Poppy Days was very successful. The Creston VFW members and area veterans would like to than a very Patriotic public. A big thank you to everyone. Also, thank you to members and families who took time to help with the event.

Post Commander O’Daniels, Quartermaster Abel, Keith Moore and Bob Jungst participated in the Creston Community High school veterans day program by posting colors and conduction a flag ceremony. VFW Post 1797 also attended and participated in programs at East Union High School and Prairie View Assisted Living.

The post will be represented at the SWCC scholarship donors appreciation dinner Nov. 13.

The Creston lighted parade will be 7 p.m. Dec. 5. Patriot Pen and Voice of Democracy essays have been received and are being judged.

Wreaths Across America will be held Dec. 14 at Iowa Veterans Cemetery at Van Meter.

In state news, District 4 meeting will be held Jan. 11 in Creston. Meeting will be adjourned at 8 p.m. The next morning will be Tuesday, Dec. 10. at the Elks with dinner at 6 p.m. and meeting to follow at 7 p.m.

IA Tops No. 1338

IA Tops No. 1338 Creston met Nov. 4 at First United Methodist Church. Eleven members were present at 5:30 p.m. Mitzie Cellan called the meeting to order with The TOPS pledge. Best loser was Carolyn Burtis and runner-up was Shellie Adamson Fines from last week went to the treasurer. The minutes were read by Bev Roberts and Alice Brown gave the treasurer report. Burtis gave an up date on the gum ball contest. Team B is new ahead.

Carol Shedahl shared a correspondence from TOPS. Areas Sue McDuff with our chapter news and ideas. She shared a poem, “Driver of our Own Bus.” Next weeks program will be given by Monica Balue. Squares contest was won by Alice Brown. The Red Can Challenge is No. 1 Take a Walk everyday.

The meeting was adjourned 6 p.m. by Cellan.

GFWC/IOWA Bancroft History Assembly

GFWC/IOWA Bancroft History Assembly met on Nov. 4 at Creston Plaza Community Room with two life members and seven regular members present.

The minutes were approved as corrected and the treasurer’s report was placed on file for audit.

JoAnn sent 12 postcards to GFWC concerning the issue of the 3D Gun Bill which is still in committee.

Bancroft History Assembly received State Honorable Mention at convention in the areas of Education, Home Life and Public Issues. We also received a Summary Report Certificate for compiling and reporting club activities to GFWC.

Marisue Lewis reported on the history of Granger, Iowa Italian Coal Miners. Granger Homestead began in 1930 when the miners and their families has less than suitable housing and wages. Through the efforts of Franklin D., Elinor Roosevelt and the local Catholic Priest, fifty parcels of land were given to chosen families. Some of these houses are still standing today. At that moment in time most of the land was owned by banks along with Prudential Insurance.

President Oswald distributed Vial of Life Medical Information Form to be filled out and posted somewhere noticeable in our homes. Centennial of Women’s Suffrage will be celebrated giving women the right to vote on Aug. 26, 2020. Perhaps we could celebrate in September next year. November is Gratitude month. Oswald would like us to bring a wrapped white elephant gift to the December meeting for a gift exchange.

Safety features discussed were hammers for breaking car windows, getting our ice scrapers out and a trick for removing frost from car windows is to use a credit card.

Motion carried to give $50 from our Civic Improvement Fund to the Historical Village to help replace rugs in the Edaburn House.

Peg Anderson invited us to a tea at the Edaburn House on 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 12 or Dec. 14. Tickets are $20.00 each.

After the Club Collect, Joan Chubick presented a program on the United States Capital. The capital building began being built in 1793 and many constructional phases have ensued since. The Statue of Freedom on top of the capital’s dome weights 15,000 pounds.

The next meeting will be 1:30 p.m. Dec. 2 at Greater Regional Health. Reading lists are due at the December meeting.

CD of A

The regular meeting of the CD of A Court No. 428 was held on Oct. 8.

Mass with Father Adam was held 6 p.m. followed Sex Trafficking Workshop by Sr. Shirleu Fineran, O.S.F., founder of Lila Mae’s House.We had a large crowd and were happy to host the public at this workshop.

October 20th is Catholic Daughters Sunday. This is a special year as it is the 100th anniversary of our court. Members will be recognized at 9 a.m. Mass.

Next meeting is Nov.12 following 6p.m. Mass. Fr. Adam plans to present about his trip to England and Ireland.We will be bringing our annual Pack a Purse for the women’s shelter and will discuss our Advent project.
