Donald Stringham, 78, of Benton, died Oct. 9, 2019, at his home.

Funeral service was held Sunday at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr. Burial was in Benton Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Ringgold Post 172 and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Memorials may be made in Don's name. Online condolences may be left at www.armstrongfh.com.

Donald Lee Stringham, son of Ernest Milton Stringham and Colene Fentress (Vance) Stringham, was born June 10, 1941, at home in Mount Ayr. Don went to school in Mount Ayr. Donnie enlisted into the Navy on Sept. 22, 1959, and served 20 years.

Donald married Joan Marie Haley June 3, 1962, at the Benton Christian Church. They decided to reside in the family home in Benton, Iowa. After his service, Don worked as a truck driver with JB Hunt, a security guard, a maintenance worker for Mount Ayr Health Care Center and a propane deliverer for Smith Oil. He purchased his own truck in 2010 then Joan and Donnie traveled many miles together.

Donald is survived by his children: Malinda (Mike) Swank of Benton and Jamie Stringham of Leon; grandchildren: Matthew (Katie) Swank of Skidmore, Missouri, Shane (Marissa) Swank of Monroe and Mitchel Swank (Micha Stephens) of Creston; two great-grandchildren; brother Curt Stringham of Cedar Rapids; sister-in-law Mary Jane (Ernie) Garrett of Diagonal; brother-in-law Don Stephens of Benton; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, brother Edward Stringham, parents, parents-in-law, brother-in-law Bob (Linda) Haley and sister-in-law Julia Stephens
