Green Valley Park clean up

Creston

My wife and I are frequent visitors to Green Valley Park. It’s a nice drive around and a nice chance to view Mother Nature and her children. Quite often we see a deer or a rabbit and sometimes turkeys. Once, we saw a bobcat, but it’s a rare sighting.

We love how she handles the birds though we haven’t so many this year as other years. For awhile, we took out grape jelly for the Orioles (they like grape jelly) but couldn’t seem to sight many this year.

Then there is deer killing day. A time once a year that officials close the park so hunters can go in and harvest the overly populated deer in the park. Not our game, but a lot of people do it, so it’s okay.

Along that same line, there’s something else officials need to do to keep our park looking nice. We need an Ash Day. We’ve got more that a few dead trees in the park, especially Ash trees. Many more than the officials can keep up with. I’m pretty sure they could use some volunteer help to clean up the park.

Here’s how it could work. First, officials need to tramp out through the woods, armed with white spray paint and “X” the trees they want to cut. Then, wait for winter, close up the park for a couple of days and turn volunteers loose to cut them down, trim up their area, take the good for their own use and bring the scrap to the road for easy clean up.

This could be a great partnership for the people who need the wood for their homes, while cleaning up the park for the rest of us to enjoy.
