Dean Wallace



Dean Wallace, 84, of Creston passed away Saturday, September 7, 2019 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Celebration of life services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery with graveside military honors provided by Theodore J. Martens V.F.W. Post 1797. Pastor Jodi Rushing and Rev. Jim Morris will officiate. Open visitation will be 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Powers Funeral Home in Creston with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are to the Greater Regional Health Care Foundation. Dean Melvin Wallace was born July 3, 1935 in Adair County south of Fontanelle, to Melvin Charles Wallace and Ethel Marguerite (Kriens) Wallace.

Dean attended country school in the Macksburg and Zion areas, later graduating from Creston High School in 1954.

Soon after graduation Dean began working at Creston Feed and Grain and then Brays Grocery Store. In 1955, Dean enlisted in the United States Air Force. Following his return from the military, Dean worked at The Family Shoe Store.

On July 3, 1971 Dean married Betty Kay (Smith) Clayton at the United Church of Christ Congregational Church in Creston. They settled in Creston where he began working for Fareway Grocery Store in the produce department.

Dean went to work for Wellman Dynamics for a short time before going to work for the Creston Water Department at the water plant on Summit Lake in the early 80’s. He was later promoted to meter reader until his retirement in 2000. During his retirement Dean worked at the Creston News Advertiser.

Dean was a member of The United Church of Christ Congregational Church, Creston American Legion Post # 70, Theodore J. Martens V.F.W. Post 1797, Creston Kiwanis, B.P.O. Elks Lodge #605, was a former member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and volunteered at Greater Regional Health.

Dean is survived by his wife Betty Wallace of Creston; his children: Marc (Bridget) Clayton of Huxley, Kari Clayton of Boone, Scott (Jennifer) Clayton of Omaha, Nebraska, and Kaela (B.J.) Pumroy of Hastings, Nebraska; brothers: Duane (Sonja) Wallace of Orient, Wendell (Shirley) Wallace of Benton and Gary (Sandy) Wallace of Hillsboro, Missouri; sisters: Darlene Blazek and Sherry Wallace both of Creston; sister-in-law Carol Wallace of Creston; ten grandchildren: Nathan (Jennette) Clayton, Shannon (Russell) Harder, Tanner Clayton (Ashley Clayton), Kody Barton, Holly Barton, Noah Clayton, Baylee Clayton, Brody Clayton, Kinnick Pumroy and Maddux Pumroy; seven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, brother Gerald Wallace and brother-in-law Louis Blazek.
