The staff at the Adair County Vet Clinic, 407 SE Noble, Greenfield, are pleased to welcome Abby Ruane to the practice as their newest veterinarian.
Ruane comes to Iowa from Connecticut, having graduated with her undergraduate degree from the University of Connecticut. She then came and studied at Iowa State because of their strong veterinary medicine program.
“I knew I wanted to do large animal work and I’ve known I’ve wanted to be a vet since I was about five years old,” Ruane said. “I have a really big interest in large animals but I like small animals too. That’s the benefit of a mixed practice like this, that I can do both. I like animals and really like agriculture, so this was the perfect fit for me.”
Ruane felt her time at ISU was very valuable as she grew in her understanding of all things animals and how to care for them.
“I had amazing support, especially from the large animal side, from the professors up there. They really do a great job of getting you into the field, getting you the experience you need,” Ruane explained.
Why does Ruane have such a focus on large animals?
“I’m very appreciative of the people who produce food for this country and I want to give back,” Ruane said.
“I really like how [Dr. Gary Schulteis] practices medicine and feel this is a really great fit,” Ruane added. “My goal is to hopefully provide clients with very good animal care, whether that’s large or small animals. Hopefully we can do some community service or outreach here as well to really get to know our clients.”
