Jose Hernandez Mata, 29, of West Liberty was charged with first degree theft and driving while barred 2:37 a.m. May 5 on 300th Street in Adair County.
According to an Adair County Sheriff’s report, deputies were dispatched to 290th Street and Highway 25 for a male subject carrying something down the road. Mata waived down the deputies as they approached, gave a false name and said he was lost and out of gas. Deputies transported Mata to a gas station and back to his vehicle with the fuel. After arriving at Mata’s vehicle deputies recognized the vehicle as reported stolen.
Mata was being held on $12,000 bond.

Daniel John Veach, 38, of Winterset was charged on an Adair County Warrant for escape from custody, two counts of fifth degree theft and interference with official acts 10:14 a.m. May 6 in Greenfield.
According to an Adair County Sheriff’s report, Veach attempted to take products from the Shopko in Greenfield, then attempted to escape from law enforcement officials trying to question him and stole a pair of handcuffs.
Estimated value of merchandise was $200.
Veach was released on $1,000 bond.
