Evelyn Griffey, 98, of Creston died Tuesday, May 7, 2019, at Creston Specialty Care.
Celebration of life services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Congregation United Church of Christ in Cromwell. The Rev. Delores Doench will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Cromwell. Visitation with the family present will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. followed by funeral services at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to Congregational United Church of Christ in Cromwell or EveryStep Hospice. Online condolences may be left at www.powersfh.com.
Evelyn Darlene Griffey, daughter of Mary Elizabeth (Smith) Burton and Lester L. Burton, was born April 16, 1921, in Creston. Evelyn attended Dodge No. 7 country school until she went to high school in Afton, graduating in 1939. She did house work for the owners of Hanson’s Drug Store in the summer, then moved to Shenandoah and worked as a bookkeeper for Ruby Electric for five years. After her father died, she moved back to Creston and began working for Harlo Chapman Insurance.
On June 30, 1946, Evelyn married Harley Albert Griffey in Creston at First Christian Church. They settled in the Shenandoah area for a short time before moving to Kansas City and back to a farm south of Cromwell. They moved to Creston in 1967, building the Western Auto Store where she worked as the bookkeeper. She worked for Green Valley Chemical doing bookkeeping. Her last work was with Recknor Clothing for 13 years before retiring in 1982.
Evelyn was a member of Cromwell Church for 50-plus years and Eastern Star and a former member of Monday Canasta Club.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Gary) Flynn of St. Louis, Missouri; son Terry Griffey of San Antonio, Texas; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband Harley; brothers, Howard, Arlo and Melvin Burton; and sisters, Vada Burton, Beulah Irons, Dorthy Benefiel and Bernadine Stalker.
