Former SWCC head coach Lorensen steps down

STORM LAKE – Buena Vista University announced that men’s basketball coach Todd Lorensen resigned Wednesday night.

Lorensen filled in the role of head coach in April of 2018, replacing long time head coach Brian Van Haafeten. Prior to joining the Beavers, Lorensen was head coach of Southwestern Community College from 2014 through the 2017-18 season. He compiled a 113-25 record with the Spartans and won the 2017 NJCAA Div. II national title.

Prior to his Southwestern tenure, he spent one season as head coach at Iowa Wesleyan University and had stints as an assistant coach at Truman State University, University of Nebraska-Omaha and Grand View University.

Under the direction of Lorensen, the Beavers finished the 2018-19 season with the 11-14 with an American Rivers Conference record of 5-11.

“I’d like to thank President Merchant, Jack Denholm, and the entire Buena Vista University community for the opportunity to serve as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach,” said Lorensen. “I’m thankful for the relationships I have made at BV and look forward to seeing the future successes of the program and institution. I have decided it is best for me and my family to pursue other professional opportunities and have resigned from the position.”

Buena Vista’s Director of Athletics Jack Denholm noted that a national search to name a head coach is underway.
