Creston dominates in Chariton

A school record, a meet win and more personal records

CHARITON – There were plenty of places to find excitement Tuesday night for Creston girls track and field head coach Clay Arnold.

The obvious place to start was with Brielle Baker, breaking her own school record in the 1,500 meter run in 4:57.63, taking down the record she set her freshman year by more than six seconds (5:03.82).

“She went after it and had a great plan and shattered her record,” said Arnold. “She set that record at conference her freshman year. It had been a long time coming to re-break it.”

Arnold noted that Baker was as fresh as possible for the event after the Panthers were disqualified in the distance medley, the only real tough break in the meet.

Her younger sister, Braelyn Baker, took second in the 1,500 and bested her personal record in the event by 10 seconds, crossing the line in 5:09.61.

“That was phenomenal. That was one of the best 1,500s anyone has ever ran for us. Brielle just kind of overshadowed that a little bit,” said Arnold.

On top of the new school record, the Panthers won the meet by a landslide with 185 team points beating second place Davis County by 68 points.

Continuing on the PR train was MaKenna Hudson, who toasted the field in the 400 meter dash in 1:01.93.

“MaKenna Hudson was huge tonight,” Arnold said. “Awesome PR in the open 400 for the win.”

Peyton Rice, who finished fifth in the 400, set a new PR in her leg of the first-place winning sprint medley relay race – as did Hudson on the final leg.

Creston stamped home that gold medal in 1:56.69.

Kelsey Fields didn’t waste any time in her preparations for the Drake Relays Thursday in winning the shot put and discus events in Chariton.

Ryli Abildtrup, who had been struggling to get over the high jump bar at 4 feet, 6 inches, blew away her old personal record, taking second place after going over 4-10.

“Just couldn’t get over the hump,” said Arnold. “She had a four inch PR in the high jump. ... We were jacked about that.”

The Panthers also grabbed golds in the 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays to build their team point advantage.

In the 3,000 meter run it was Creston doubling up on its competition with first and second place finishes from Paige Davis and Ali Christensen, respectively.

UP NEXT – Creston will head to Carlisle Thursday while Fields heads up to Des Moines for her Drake Relay throws Thursday (discus, 4 p.m.) and Friday (shot put, 8:30 a.m.).
