Area track round up: MA qualifies for Drake Relays; Murray performs well in Melcher-Dallas

Mount Ayr at Martenstdale-St. Marys

MARTENSDALE – The Mount Ayr boys competed in the Martensdale-St. Marys Invitational Thursday, placing second in overall team points with 107. Madrid took the meet with the high score of 186.5.

Chase Henry had a good day in the field, throwing a 44 foot, 2 3/4 inch distance in the shot put that was the second furthest distance of the day. Henry also placed in the top five in discus, throwing the disc 122 feet even for a fourth place finish.

The shuttle hurdle of Kolben Klommhaus, Seth Shelman, Keelan Klommhaus and Dawson Frost also ran the fastest time of the day, running a 1:04.56.

The 4x100 group of Hunter Arends, Seth Shellman, Dawson Swank and Kolben Klommhaus ran the second fastest time in Mount Ayr school history at 44.92. The 55th fastest time in the state according to Quikstats qualified them for the 2019 Drake Relays, starting Thursday.

They’ll run Saturday in the high school boys 4x100 preliminaries at 10:03 a.m. in the seventh heat.

Timberwolves invitational

CORNING – The Southwest Valley girls hosted the Timberwolves Invitational Thursday. Shendandoah won the meet with the SWV girls placing sixth of the 14 teams present.

Bella Johnson won the only field event for the Timberwolves, clearing 4-10 in the high jump.

SWV’s group of Aunalee Bruce, Norah Lund, Lexie Haer and Kayley Myers placed third in the 4x200 (2:03.02) and fourth in the 4x100 (57.69).

The distance medley team of Lund, Haer, Karsyn Poston and Halle Pearson set a school record, running a 5:57.99 in their fifth place finish.

East Union co-ed invite

AFTON – The East Union Co-ed Invitational was Thursday, with EU hosting area schools Murray and Orient-Macksburg in a field of six teams.

The Central Decatur girls took first in the girls team standings, scoring 190 points. East Union finished second with 160 and Murray and O-M placed fourth and fifth with 69 and 23 points, respectively.

The boys standings ended with Lamoni placing first with 192 points. Murray and EU placed third and fourth with 86 and 76 points, respectively. O-M placed sixth with 18 points.

East Union’s Gabrielle Valencia ran the fastest times in the 1,500 and 3,000 meter run, running a 5:56.10 in the 1,500 then running a 13:03.68 in the 3,000. She finished 10 seconds faster than the second finisher in the 1,500 and finished 25 seconds faster than the next girl in the 3,000.

EU’s distance medley team also ran an impressive time, with Beth McKnight, Alissa Weinkoetz, Molly McNeill and Elizabeth Hardy running a 5:04.44 for the quickest time by over 20 seconds.

Murray’s Emma Decker threw the farthest in the shot put, throwing 30 feet, 11 1/2 inches. Megan Keller also placed second in the 400 meter dash for the Mustangs, running a 1:06.39.

Orient-Macksburg’s Caitlyn Gist and Kaela Eslinger placed fourth and fifth in the 400 meter dash, running a 1:14.11 and a 1:14.44, respectively . Gist also ran in the 400 meter hurdles, running the fifth fastest time at 1:28.66.

EU’s Caleb Comstock ran the fastest time of area schools in the 100 meter dash, placing third with a time of 11.96. His 4x100 meter relay team of Anthony Smith, Kanyon Huntington and Rafael Lopez placed third clocking in at 50.39.

Huntington’s time in the 400 meter dash was also the second fastest, running a 58.96.

Murray’s Colton Siefkas and Christian Nevares finished third and fourth in the 1,600 meter run, running a 5:04.61 and a 5:11.86, respectively.

Damien Kitner’s time in the 400 meter hurdles was the fastest time for Murray, clocking in at 1:05.24 for the second fastest overall.

The Mustangs also did well in the field events, with Brycen Wookey throwing the second farthest shot put at 39-07.50 and Wyatt Myers throwing discus 109-10.

Murray in Melcher-Dallas

MELCHER-DALLAS – Both Murray squads made the trip to Melcher-Dallas Wednesday, with the boys placing second and the girls finishing fourth.

Reece Held had a historic night for Murray, breaking the school high jump record with a jump of 6 feet even. He tied the previous record April 13 in Lenox with a jump of 5 feet, 10 inches that matched Daniel Turner (2008), Billy Carper (1987) and Brian McConnell (1987).

The Murray boys had first place finishes from Devin Slaughter in the long jump at a distance of 18-01.

The 4x100 and 4x200 teams of Chance Lecy, Held, Josh Webb and Slaughter ran the fastest times of the day, running a 48.46 in the 4x100 and a 1:45.13 in the 4x200.

The Mustang girls also had success in the field, finishing first in the shot put with Emma Decker hurling the shot put 29-11 1/4.

Megan Keller also had a good day on the track, running the second fastest in the 200 meter dash (29.12) and the fastest in the 400 meter dash (1:07.83). She was also third in the high jump, clearing a height of 4-8.

Carla Ivaldi’s long jump distance of 13-9 also was the fourth longest of the day.
