Panther girls await Drake announcement after Carroll meet

CARROLL – Thursday’s meet at Carroll was a cooler night on the track for the Creston girls track and field team as they took third in team points behind Dallas Center-Grimes and Atlantic.

A number of Panthers set new personal records and season bests on the last night of potential qualification for the Drake Relays.

Kelsey Fields, who is likely headed to the Drake Relays in the shot put and discus, put an exclamation on her candidacy with a season best and a gold medal in the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 7 inches.

That mark ties her for 15th in the state in shot put throws, according to QuikStats, which will qualify her for the Drake Relays in the event, assuming the placement holds.

Fields did not best her season long throw in the discus, but still took home first place with a throw of 121 feet, 5 inches.

“That was excellent,” said Creston head coach Clay Arnold of Fields’ throws Thursday. “That was really exciting to see her get the double (gold) there.”

The season best throw for Fields was set in Clarinda April 2 with a mark of 126-5. The throw is the 17th best on QuikStats as of Thursday night with the Drake relays taking the top 24.

In other events, Peyton Rice set a new personal record in the 400 meter run and took home a first place finish in 1:05.30.

Paige Davis set a new PR in the 3,000 meter run, her first time competing in the event this season.

The mark of 11:59.52 brought home third place for Davis Thursday night and bested her record from last year by more than 80 seconds.

Brianna Fields also impressed Arnold in her relay races, including the sprint medley.

“She got the call up and anchored the sprint med and ran another PR,” said Arnold. “... We we’re really excited about that.”

MaKenna Hudson ran a shorter race than usual and took home third in the 100 meter dash and set a new PR by a full second.

However, in certain areas Arnold thought the Panthers didn’t look quite as precise as they had throughout the season in some of their events on the track.

“We were not quite as sharp as we were the last two meets,” said Arnold. “We just didn’t quite have that energy that we had been having and it showed.”

UP NEXT – The confidence isn’t wavering for the Panthers as they turn around with a meet at Chariton looking for a team win.
