Creston/O-M golf took a clean sweep at Pine Valley Golf Course Thursday afternoon, winning with the low scores in both boys and girls meets over Shenandoah and Southwest Valley.

The Creston boys shot 151, edging out Shenandoah’s score of 166. The Panther girls scored 160, topping the Filies score of 194.

A windy afternoon made for less than ideal conditions when tee time came around, but Creston head coach Jon Thomson said it’s nothing the team hasn’t played through this season.

“I was not expecting that (wind),” said Thomson. “But we’ve kind of been playing in that for the last week or so anyway, so the wind is no stranger to us. They all handled it really well.”

Colby Burg and Rylie Driskell continued to play superb golf this spring, medaling with the lows of the meet. Burg shot a 35 (+3) and Driskell shot a 34 (+2) through nine holes.

Creston swept the runner-ups also with Cole Strider as the next lowest with a 37 and Maria Groumoutis scoring a 40 as the girls runner-up.

“The boys are really starting to roll a little bit here,” said Thomson. “They’ve been playing really good golf and I’m really happy with the way they’re swinging the clubs. ... The girls shot really well with both the medalist and runner-up being Creston kids, that’s more confidence for us as we roll into our next tournament.

“It’s really fun to watch them golf and their game’s coming around but, we’re not quite there yet but we’re getting there,” added Thomson.

T-Wolves bring the boys out

Southwest Valley’s day on the course combating the wind was difficult and also not expected from Timberwolves head coach Cindy Drake.

“I did not expect it to be this windy or this cold,” said Drake. “Some of our kids weren’t really prepared which made for not such a pleasant day.”

With winds rolling in from the north at 15 miles per hour, it’d stereotypically be a tough day on the links for most golfers. Drake believes it wasn’t the case Thursday.

“I think every one of them had one of their better scores for the year,” said Drake. “I’m pleased with the way they played today (Thursday).”

Southwest Valley’s Abbie Wetzel finished the day with a 48, the SWV girls low. Scotty Adcock shot a 45, the low for a boys team that had not been able to field a full squad all season.

“This is the first time we’ve been able to field a boys team all season, so we’re really excited about that,” said Drake.

Other notable scores for the Timberwolves were Connor Shipley, shooting a 49. Maddie Ballard also scored a 57 for the Timberwolf girls.

UP NEXT – Creston/O-M faces off against Clarke today (Friday). Southwest Valley is next in action Tuesday in Mount Ayr.
