INDIANOLA — Battling cold temperatures and a 30 mph wind, Southwestern’s Bianca Findlay stood above the crowd at the Simpson Invitational Wednesday afternoon.
The Spartan sophomore shot a 9-over par 80 on the rolling hills of Indianola Country Club. Runner-up medalist was William Penn’s Deanna Peiffer with an 83.
As a team Southwestern was fifth in the field that included several four-year schools with a score of 393. Spartan freshman Ashton Carter of Creston missed out on a placing medal based on handicap holes, after tying two other golfers locked in the third-best 18-hole score of 90.
“I thought the girls played pretty well,” said SWCC assistant coach Ryan Palser. “Bianca’s score is very good considering the conditions out there.”
Simpson College edged the Spartans for fourth place by one stroke at 393. Among the scoring golfers in the Storm’s lineup was junior Madison Hance of Creston, who finished with a 102.
“I struggled with the short game a little today, but we all had to play in the same conditions,” Hance said. “There were some holes we played against the wind where I played up a club or two, and still came up short of the green. The wind really picked up on the last two or three holes.”
Gusts out of the east approached 40 mph by the end of the tournament around 2:30 p.m., after golfers teed off in temperatures below 50 degrees at 10 a.m. Conditions were in stark contrast to Sunday and Monday, when Simpson participated at Bos Landen in Pella in sunshine with temperatures in the 70s.
Graceland University won the meet with a score of 374, led by Molly Carey’s score of 90 that edged Carter for the fifth-place medal based on the handicap hole.
