Marie Antoinette Pitkin, 91, of Shannon City died Saturday, March 23, 2019, at Mount Ayr Health Care Center in Mount Ayr.

Celebration of life services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, at Powers Funeral Home, 612 N. Dodge St., in Afton. Pastor Dwayne Henrichs will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, south of Shannon City. Open visitation with family receiving friends will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, at Powers Funeral Home in Afton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Oakland Cemetery or to the family. Online condolences can be made at www.powersfh.com.

Marie Antoinette (Hanon) Pitkin, daughter of Elmer P. Hanon and Mary (Ingraham) Hanon, was born June 28, 1927, in Creston. She was educated in Thayer schools. Marie was the first employee to work at Geis Jewelry in Creston.

On March 3, 1946, she was united in marriage to Wayne Pitkin in Afton, and together they farmed in the Shannon City area. She worked as an active homemaker and farmwife, raising three children, Donna Marie, Diana Dee and Dennis Wayne. She loved her cows, fed them by hand and had names for each one.

She enjoyed word puzzles and traveling with Wayne on his insurance jobs and conventions. Marie enjoyed raising and canning a large garden and neighborhood card parties. She lived on her farm north of Shannon City, for more than 70 years. She enjoyed traveling in her later years to Texas and Arizona.

Survivors include two daughters, Donna (husband Ken) Smith of Creston and Diana Meinke of Forsyth, Missouri; four grandsons, Randy Smith of Greenfield, Darrell Smith of Winterset, Rodney Meinke of Arispe and Rusty Meinke of Emerson; eight grandchildren, Carla and Reagan Smith, Ashton and Lane Smith, Alisha and Rhianna Meinke, Zack Meinke and Clara Meinke; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; husband Wayne in 1995; a son Dennis Pitkin in 1975; a grandson Ryan Meinke; granddaughter-in-law Brenda Smith in 2004; and four sisters, Juanita (husband Basil) Willett, Irene (husband Leland) VanderLinden, Laura Jane (husband Dwayne) Spangler and Phyllis (husband Alan) Clampett.
