Mount Ayr kicks off track season indoors

MARYVILLE, Mo – The Raiders started their season off on a high note, performing well at Indoor High School Open said head coach Brad Elliott.

“Several athletes earned personal best performances in their first competition. It’s not very often you see kids perform this well indoors, but the facility and level of competition was perfect for top quality efforts,” said Elliott.

Chase Henry threw his way to second place, posting a 45 foot, 10 inch distance.

Seth Shelman also finished in second, running a 7.43 second time in the 60 meter run.

Chase Smith ran the sixth best time all-time in the 3200 meter run, posting a 10 minute, 36.78 second time.

His teammate Isaac Timmerman also posted a top-ten time in Mount Ayr community school history, posting a 4:407.07 time in the 1600 meter run. The seventh best time in school history was the best at the meet.

Southwest Valley, Mount Ayr run in Ames

AMES – Southwest Valley and Mount Ayr track and field found its way up to Ames Monday afternoon, running in the Iowa State High School Classic Monday and Tuesday.

Southwest Valley track and field head coach Jason Hults had praise for his team this early in the season.

“I was really pleased with the times and jumps that the girls had (Monday),” said Hults. “It was a great team bonding day for our upperclassmen as we get ready for the outdoor season.”

The SWV girls competed in several events, with its best individual performance coming from Bella Johnson in the high jump.

Johnson finished in a 19-way tie for 14th, scoring 4-08. According to Hults, she set a personal record in the high jump. Hults also stated Johnson had a photo finish in her heat for the 60 meter hurdles, finishing with an 11.10 time.

The team ran only one four person relay, running the 4x800 with a quartet of Morgan Shuey, Kaylee Jacobs, Olivia Jacobs and Hailey Thomas. The group posted a time of 13:01.73, finishing 49th.

Due to the meet running behind schedule, the 4x100 and 4x400 races SWV was scheduled to run were scratched to give the extra recovery time for participating teams.

The Mount Ayr girls did not run in the meet Monday afternoon, but both Southwest Valley and Mount Ayr boys ran Tuesday night.

The Raiders best finish was as a group in the 1600 sprint medley.

Hunter Arends, Connor Eaton, Seth Shelman and Issac Timmerman finished sixth with a time of 3:47.85, nearly nine seconds off Atlantic’s first place time of 3:38.80.

The Raiders also finished well in the 60 meter dash with Shelman running a 7.51, finishing in 26th place.

Mount Ayr placed 14th in the shot put, with Chase Henry posting a 46-7.50, with two Southwest Valley throwers not far behind.

Jacob Webb and Hunter Poston finished 18th and 19th, respectively, in the shot put with nearly identical throws.

Webb’s throw of 45-03.50 and Poston’s throw of 45-01.25 were the best finishes for SWV in Ames.

For high jump, Christian McCuen was able to a 5-6.00 number, finishing 28th. McCuen also participated in the 60 meter hurdle event, getting clocked at 10.79, finishing in 79th.
