Creston Volunteer Fire Department is hosting its annual dance to raise and support for a new training facility in Creston.
“It will replicate a lot of real-life scenarios,” said Daniel Stull, Creston volunteer firefighter.
Even though the volunteer fire department has a shipping container it currently uses for training, a new facility would allow them the capability of rappeling off of a tower, and building features that replicate commercial and residential structures, in which firefighters can practice ventilating and making entry.
Creston Firefighter Casey Carpenter is experienced in building such training facilities, and believes the department can build the facility at a fraction of the cost – approximately $50,000.
“The cost to do it through another company would be tenfold that,” said Carpenter.
The department hopes to build a facility that is two to three shipping containers wide and two or three stories tall.
“It kind of depends on money and how it outlays, and we’ll decide how large it will be,” said Carpenter.
Stull said the annual fundraiser is important to the department as these types of projects are not funded by the city.
Creston Volunteer Fire Department has secured a private pledge, which Stull said is a “good chunk,” but the department still has a ways to go to reach their goal.
