8th grade girls

Creston eighth-grade girls defeated Shenandoah on Feb. 14, 40-14, after leading 27-0 at halftime. Doryn Paup scored 11 points for Creston and Jacy Kralik added eight.

“We came out right away and took control of the game,” Creston coach Larry McNutt said. We applied good pressure defense and got out in the passing lanes that led to easy baskets. We had several days off because of the weather so it was good to see the girls come out and get after them right away. A good team effort.”

Creston also won the B game, 12-10, as Harlee Flynn scored four points.

“The girls got off to a good start and hung in there for the close win,” coach McNutt said. “We made a few outside shots and played good defense most of the game.”

Creston eighth-graders completed a 10-0 season with a 57-17 victory at home over Clarinda on Monday. The Panthers pulled away after a 14-8 first quarter, outscoring the Cardinals 15-6 in the second quarter and 21-0 in the third.

Doryn Paup scored 16 points and Aleah Calvin added 15 in the season finale.

“We started a little slow and had too many fouls and missed easy shots,” coach Larry McNutt said. “We had a great third quarter to pull away. I really enjoyed working with these girls. They were enthusiastic and willing to try to get better each and every day. They have a lot of talent and if they continue to work hard they will have success in high school. I wish them all the best in high school and beyond. They are just a great group of girls!”

Creston also won the B game, 8-5, to complete a 6-1 season. The Panthers were led by Harlee Flynn’s four points.

“This group got a lot of playing time in A games along with the B games,” McNutt said. “They continued to get better all season despite the limited practices because of the weather. They are great kids. I wish only the best for them in high school.”

Creston A (57) — Doryn Paup 16, Aleah Calvin 15, Tristen Rice 9, Jacy Kralik 6, Nevaeh Randall 3, Keely Coen 2, Haylee Gillam 2, Caylee Flynn 2, Harlee Flynn 2. Rebounds — Calvin 6, Paup 5, Randall 5, Coen 5. Steals — Calvin 7, Gillam 3. Assists — Kralik 3. Clarinda A (17).

7th grade girls

The Creston seventh-grade girls traveled to Treynor Feb. 8 and picked up their first victory, 23-18.

“We played a good game,” Creston coach Mendy McCreight said. “We were able to use our post players more in this game as they both had six points each. We had a strong first half and struggled in the third quarter, but we fought back and came out strong in the fourth quarter to get the victory.”

Creston A (23) — Morgan VanGelder 6, Josie Mahan 6, Sophie Hagle 5, Zoe Ralston 2, Lydia Goins 2, Abbie Wheeler 2. Treynor A (18).

The Creston B team lost to Treynor, 42-0.

“It was a very physical and tough game,” McCreight said. “We had a few good shots but just couldn’t get anything to fall.”

On Feb. 14 Creston seventh graders lost at home to Shenandoah, 48-7. MaKenna Brown scored four points, Morgan VanGelder tallied two and Sophie Hagle scored one.

Shenandoah also won the B game, 11-6. Scoring two points each were Gracie Travis, Sophie Hagle and Halli Abildtrup.

The seventh-graders ended their season Monday in a 40-3 home loss to Clarinda. Halli Abildtrup scored two points and Josie Mahan notched one.

“We struggled getting the ball in the hoop tonight,” McCreight said. “Our defense had improved from the time we played them before, as we did a better job of rotating and helping. We played a bit of zone but we were unable to box out and rebound, allowing them to get multiple chances to score.”

Clarinda won a 12-minute running clock game, 7-4. Lydia Goins and Brayley Davis scored two points each for Creston.

“There were a lot of jump balls and aggressiveness in the B game,” McCreight said. “We struggled again getting the ball in the hoop.”

Overall, coach McCreight felt there was some growth during the season.

“It might not have been the best season looking at th scores, but this team has improved in the game of basketball,” McCreight said. “It his hard to beat a team who never gives up. I really enjoyed working with these young ladies and hope they stay positive and keep playing the game. The season wasn’t the best due to weather, which cut down practice times. But, the games helped them learn the game and different situations that occur in the game.”
