The Union County Fair Board of Directors updated donors on its fundraising success during a fundraising event Feb. 6 at Three Mile Lodge.
“We had a great county fair with the new buildings and we’re excited for the future,” said Jamie Travis, board member.
Travis said, as of the end of its fiscal year, Sept. 30, the board reported raising $1,883,724.68. The amount allowed the board to demolish four cattle buildings and one small animal building, where the First National Bank building currently stands.
The fruit of the board’s fundraising efforts were showcased during the 2018 Union County Fair, where new buildings, restrooms and a show arena, sponsored by Iowa State Savings Bank and United Farmers Cooperative, were unveiled to the public.
Travis said the new buildings serve the entire county year round.
“The cattle barn has been used by equestrian people with their horses. When the pins come out of there, it’s got a nice dirt floor in it ... it really works well when we have adverse weather,” said Travis.
The facilities at the fairgrounds have also been host to cattle and swine shows, and weddings.
“What we’re seeing is that there’s quite a bit more interest in trying to rent the facility,” said Travis. “So we look at it as, the facility belongs to the county. Anything you want to do, you can use those facilities throughout the year to help things progress within the county.”
To finance the fairgrounds, private contributions were made and loans were borrowed, which are paid off by individuals, families, businesses and organizations who pledged to pay monthly. However, Travis and fellow board members encourage those who are able to pay off their pledges early to do so.
“We would love to see that money come in quicker to avoid some interest costs,” said Travis.
As they look toward the future, the board hopes to continue to make updates to the cook shack, add heating and air-conditioning to some buildings, and possibly add an office and meeting room.
“We’re open to any ideas,” said Travis.
