Boys basketball roundup: Murray advances; SWV, EU, Lenox season's close

Murray 72, Clarinda Academy 60

BEDFORD – Behind 21 points from Devin Slaughter and 20 more from Reece Held, Murray kept its season alive with a 72-60 win over Clarinda Academy Thursday night.

Murray moves on to tangle with Bedford in Creston today (Tuesday) at 6:30 p.m in the Class 1A District 12 substate semifinals.

“I really thought that Reece Held and Devin Slaughter played a great game tonight,” said Murray head coach Darin Wookey. “Jeran Cosner played maybe his best game as a Mustang, scoring 13 points.”

Slaughter completed the contest with a double double adding 14 boards to go along with his scoring output.

Jace Rodecker also added nine points for the Mustangs. Held also posted seven assists and four steals.

Martensdale-St. Marys 71, Southwest Valley 31

MARTENSDALE – Southwest Valley boys basketball’s season came to a close Thursday at the hands of a talented Martensdale-St. Marys team, 71-31 in Class 1A District 13.

“We hate to see the season end but wish all our seniors the best. Dustin Lund, Jacob Webb, Hunter Poston, and Scotty Adcock,” said head coach Andrew Focht.

Seniors Lund and Adcock led the Timberwolves with six points apiece as did Christian McCuen.

Mormon Trail 79, Lenox 32

LAMONI – Mormon Trail jumped out to a large lead early against Lenox Feb. 13 and didn’t look back as the Tigers’ season came to a close in Class 1A District 12.

Colton Vieux led Lenox with 10 points while Ethan Sheley and JC Arevalo had five and four, respectively.

Carter Still ended the night with three points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Bedford 90, East Union 39

BEDFORD – Thursday saw East Union’s season come to an end at the hands of a 17-4 Bedford team, 90-39, in the opening round of Class 1A District 12 play.

The Bulldogs had four scorers in double figures, led by Cooper Nally’s 31 points.

Damien Henry (15), Brennan Sefrit (13) and Jordan Perkins (14) were the other players in double figures for Bedford.

East Union stats were unavailable as of Monday night.
