A 37-point offensive explosion in the third quarter Saturday carried Southwestern women’s basketball right past Little Priest Tribal College 98-65.

The Spartans trailed by six points after one quarter, but then the rout was on as SWCC scored 79 points in the final three 10-minute periods.

Madelyn Moya led the charge with 28 points, hitting 10 field goals and going 6 of 8 from the free throw line.

Four other Spartans finished the contest in double figures as C’Anne Hunter posted 13 points while Kayela Willis, Jasmine Aviles and Vanessa Romo all scored 11 points.

“The girls came out and had great enthusiasm. Great determination and effort,” said SWCC head coach Bryan Austin. “... We need to keep that momentum going and they did that.”

The Spartans took 42 attempts from the charity stripe, led by Kierra Brice, who didn’t hit a field goal but finished the contest with eight points on an 8-9 night at the line.

The 98 points is a season high for the Spartans as Austin said afterward he thought SWCC shot nearly 50 percent from the floor.

Southwestern only turned the ball over 11 times, something Austin said the team has been working on consistently.

Giving up only 65 points on the defensive end was another point of note for Austin.

“The girls were just in communication a lot. We talked about it. We’ve harped on it,” said Austin. “... They felt like they should have gotten the win the first time we played them.”

SWCC and Little Priest met just a little more than two weeks ago with the Warriors taking advantage of their home floor in an 83-71 win.

The win moves the Spartans to 9-14 overall and 3-8 in conference play, heading into the final two-and-a-half weeks of the season.

UP NEXT – Southwestern has two important conference games on the road this week against Ellsworth (0-24, 0-11) and Iowa Central (12-11, 3-7).

Two more conference wins over teams the Spartans have already beaten this season will jump SWCC into the middle of the pack in conference play.

“I think we’re playing some pretty good ball right now. So they’re seeing some things we’ve been talking about all year and it’s kind of clicking,” said Austin. “That’s our goal right now is to get a good seat at the table going into postseason play.”
