CLARINDA – The Creston girls cruised to a win over Clarinda on Thursday, beating the Cardinals 65-29.

The Panther girls had an early lead after the first eight minutes of play at 15-7, but pulled away entering halftime as they outscored Clarinda by 13 in the secod quarter.

“We did a good job of executing,” said Creston head coach Tony Neubauer. “We started a little slow on offense, but we got going. It was a good night to get everybody involved.”

The Panthers had more than 10 different players get varsity minutes tonight, including junior varisty players Morgan, Rylie Driskell and Brianna Fields.

The trio combined for two points, with Fields scoring the only basket.

The Panthers saw the bulk of the scoring come from Kelsey Fields, nearly outscoring the Clarinda squad with a team-high 25 points. Brielle Baker was also able to do damage on the floor with 16 points.

“We had a couple of rushed shots and bad passes,” said Neubauer. “We started going through Kelsey and Brielle a little bit and that helped us get to the basket and pick up the pace.”

Creston’s defense was tight all game, not allowing the Cardinals to score more than 10 points in a quarter limiting them to 12 points total in the second half.

We just focused on playing defense,” said Neubauer about their second half success. “Steals will come to us if we play good defense. ... The kids did a good job of and we got plenty of steals just by playing good halfcourt defense. We weren’t in any sort of foul trouble, so that wasn’t a problem at all.”

The Panthers had no player over two fouls, totaling 13 for the game.

“We just did a good job of taking care of business like we’re supposed to,” said Neubauer.

History

Creston’s Brielle Baker has another milestone to add in her storied Creston career, passing Amanda Parker with her 175th steal in her Panther basketball career.
