Welcome back to Maple Street

I’d just like to take this space to welcome the people of Creston and the surrounding area to the Grand Re-opening of the 100 block of Maple Street in Uptown Creston. I can’t tell you exactly when it will happen, but we’re getting closer. It’s been since Nov. 29 that this block has been fenced off, allowing for the demolition of the condemned building of the former ... well, I’m not sure exactly what it was last, but previous to that, it was the Places store. Previous to the Places store, it housed many different businesses before its ultimate demise.

We have seen much change in the old downtown. I can remember some of that change and the reasons why they became something else. The experts tell us that change can be a good thing. I would agree if it brings us something to replace the old. Historically speaking, it’s nice to leave something behind to remind us of buildings that once were thriving. A new green space or parking lot, or whatever it will become, will only remind us that we were negligent in maintaining this space till it was too late to save it.

Take a few minutes to drive through the old downtown, now call the new uptown. Stop and shop in the remaining stores. And by means, share with the present store owners your thoughts about what used to be in their present locations. Help them to stay in their businesses and live on to the next great change, whatever that will be.
