Joan M. Madison, 83, of Creston passed away Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019, at her home northeast of Creston.

Celebration of life memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at Powers Funeral Home, 601 New York Ave., in Creston. Burial will be private. Rev. Jim Morris will officiate.  Open visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at Powers Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are to Jerusalem United Methodist Church of Creston. Joan May (Osborn) Madison was born July 22, 1935, in Blythedale, Missouri, to George Olif Osborn and Mabel (Nauman) Osborn. She graduated from Arispe High School in 1953, studied two years at Creston Community College and went on to earn her BA and her Master’s in education from Drake University in Des Moines.

On May 29, 1955, Joan was united in marriage to Richard Paul Madison in Creston at the First Methodist Church. They lived in the Zion area, where Joan taught school. They then moved to Norfolk, Virginia, while Richard was in the service and Joan was a homemaker at that time. Joan resumed teaching after they moved back to a home north of Prescott. She started teaching in Creston, and they bought the farm in 1968, where they currently reside. Joan retired in 1996, and after retiring, she taught preschool in her home for two years. She loved music and horses.

Joan was a member of Jerusalem United Methodist Church of Creston.

Survivors include her husband Richard Madison Sr. of Creston; five children, Richard P. (wife Terry) Madison Jr. of Creston, Melody J. (husband Arnold) Stoll of Creston, Dawn J. (husband Doug) Biere of Johnston, Jon M. (wife Patti) Madison of Ankeny and Patrick J. (wife Jean) Madison of Afton; 13 grandchildren, Rachel Ann (husband Jerard) Williams, Richard P. (special friend Marie Timmerman) Madison III, Joshua J. Madison, Nicole (husband Andy) Jennett, Alex (wife Summer) Stoll, Jeremy Stoll, Brandon Biere, Brittney Biere, Shelby (husband Steven) Young, Jacob Madison, Garret Madison, Justin Madison and Chelsey (fiancé Mick Ames) Madison; five great-grandchildren, Cason and Marlee Williams, Olivia and Evan Jennett and Victoria Stoll; one sister Joy Madonna Wallace of Davis City and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Jean Marie Downey and Alma Joyce Osborn in infancy.
