Creston/O-M splits

Panthers wrestle to a split on Pin Cancer and Senior Night

Creston/O-M wrestling lived up to the nights events with a win over Perry (54-26) and a close, competitive loss to Winterset (40-33) on Pin Cancer and Senior Nights.

The Panthers final dual of the evening was against Winterset on a lone mat in the center of the Creston Community High School gymnasium.

Falling behind 24-0 early, the Panthers hit their steadiest part of the lineup and quickly climbed back into contention.

With the lights dimmed for the final dual, Jackson Kinsella took the mat to Johnny Cash’s “God’s Gonna Cut You Down,” and brought the words and the Panther team to life cutting down Winterset’s Kade Forsyth in 39 seconds for a pin.

Kinsella also pinned his opponent from Perry inside of the first minute and continues to excel on the mat.

“I’m just going out there and getting on my offense, not sitting around letting them dictate the pace,” said Kinsella. “ ... I wrestled all fall. Went down to Fall Brawl in Kansas City and Preseason National in Des Moines, didn’t get the results there I wanted, but that’s fine. We’re clicking right now and that’s what I’m happy about.”

Beau Barncastle snagged an 8-1 decision win at 182 pounds and Sam Chapman picked up right where Kinsella left off with a pin inside of the first 30 seconds at 195.

Trevor Kinyon continued to pin opponents in his way after stepping back into the lineup last week – following an ACL injury – and pinned Henry Tromba at 220 in the third period after trailing most of the match.

“Until you get those matches, wrestling shape is just different,” said Creston/O-M head coach Cody Downing. “He was able to gut it out and get a win and I give him credit for that, but he’s got to clean things up.”

Kinyon was able to turn a reversal into a pin and in the process bring Creston/O-M within three points, 24-21. Kinyon also pinned Perry’s Sebastian Hernandez in his first action of the season.

Winterset grabbed three victories after the Panther swing by way of a major decision at 285 and pins at 106 and 113.

Kaden Bolton earned the Panthers six points for making weight at 120 thanks to an open slot from Winterset and Beau Thompson capped the night with a pin over Carson Rhoads in 2:52.

“We will get Winterset again,” said Downing. “Came up a little short this time. We will get better for it.”

Creston/O-M’s dual against Perry went against expectations for Downing, who thought the Panthers would have a little more difficulty with the night’s first foe.

After ending his night with a pin, Thompson started the evening with a 30 second pin over Perry’s Alex Fickbohm.

“I thought we came out and fought really hard against Perry,” said Downing. “I thought Perry would be a lot closer than it was, so to pick that up was good.”

Overall, the Panthers picked up 10 of their 15 individual match wins by pin on Pin Caner Night, including Rylan Luther starting the evening with one at 160 pounds.

“It’s really neat,” said Downing about putting on the Pin Cancer Night. “Almost everyone on the team knows somebody or has somebody that’s been affected by cancer. To do our part and know that we’re fighting for those people can hopefully inspire some good out of this.”

Also before Creston/O-M took the mat for the first time were the seniors, Barncastle, Matthew Borha, Kendall Crawford and Kinyon.

“They’ve meant a ton. ... Where they’ve came from, this group of seniors, I’m going to be sad to see them go,” said Downing. “We’ve got a month left and they’re going to be a big part of leading the way.”

The Panthers were without Andy Weis, who suffered a concussion in the Forest City Invite on Saturday. Crawford is also out with a concussion and both wrestlers’ timetables are up in the air as of now.

UP NEXT – Creston/O-M heads to Centerville Saturday for the Mike Halupnick Invite.
