Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Library Board met Dec. 19 with the following members present: Starr Cure, Judy Hoakison, Bunny Norton, Kay Raymond, Ann Coulter, David Hargrove, student representative Caprial Norton and guest Tessa Hull.

The minutes and treasurer’s report were approved.

Coulter mentioned the board of trustees have been working on the budget. They are adding more money for programming.

Hargrove stated the $250,000 DEKKO check arrived. The state has an assessment which indicated how the library is doing in the area of technology. The results will influence the direction of programming. The library will be closed Dec. 24-25.

St. Patrick Day dinner/auction will be held March 16.

The next meeting will be 6 p.m. Jan. 21 at the library.

VFW Post 1797

VFW Post 1797 met Dec. 11 at the Elks Lodge in Creston with 16 members and guests present. After dinner, a presentation was made to Alan Worth for his brother who is missing in action in Vietnam since 1975.

Commander Gary O’Daniels called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. with 11 members present.

The post had no veterans to drape the flag.

Service officers reported 35 hours for community service, 64 hours for honor guard and 99 hours at the hospital. The post also traveled 622 miles for veterans in October and November.

Minutes and QM reports were read and approved.

In old business, the abstract for the VFW building in Afton has been given to the city clerk. It will be reviewed by the Afton city attorney.

In new business;, upcoming events include Wreaths across America held 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter. Volunteers are welcome.

Veterans on the Hill will be Jan. 23 at the capital in Des Moines.

Voice of Democracy winners were announced and a presentation will be held at the next meeting.

A soup supper is planned for Jan. 26 at the Williamson Legion with proceeds going to the Honor Flight.

In district news, the next district meeting will be Jan. 12 in Centerville and mid-winter will be Jan. 18-20.

The meeting adjourned at 8 p.m.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the Elks Lodge with dinner at 6 p.m. and meeting to follow at 7 p.m. All war veterans are encouraged to attend.
