Area boys basketball roundup: Nodaway Valley and Mount Ayr pick up big wins

Nodaway Valley 75, Southwest Valley 27

CORNING – Clay Hohertz’s 22 points on 7 of 12 shooting pushed Nodaway Valley past Southwest Valley Tuesday 75-27.

Hohertz wasn’t alone in the outpouring of points as Aryll Shantz added 18 points on eight buckets and Toby Bower put in 10.

The Wolverines had 20 assists on 27 made baskets and jacked 27 steals, lead by Cole Shike’s seven swipes and Hohertz’s six.

A banged up Southwest Valley squad relied on Dustin Lund and Christian McCuen’s performances once again as they each had eight points.

The Timberwolves managed just 11 points by the halftime intermission.

Mount Ayr 56, Lenox 28

MOUNT AYR – The Raiders didn’t mess around Tuesday against the Tigers of Lenox, holding the visiting squad to just six points at the half on the way to a 56-28 Mount Ayr win.

Dawson Frost put up 19 points, leading all scorers on the floor.

Isaac Grose was the lone other Raider to reach double-digits with 10 points as seven other Mount Ayr players found their way onto the score sheet.

Lenox received contributions from a number of players, but struggled overall from the floor, hitting just 33.3 percent of shots from the floor.

Colton Vieux led the Tigers with five points.

Martensdale-St. Marys 93, East Union 31

AFTON – East Union went up against an undefeated Martensdale-St. Marys squad Tuesday and fell 93-31.

Matt McGuire and Kaden Kirkland had 11 and 10 points, respectively for the Eagles while both grabbed three steals.

Isaac Gavin did the damage for the Blue Devils with 20 points and seven boards.

Mormon Trail 83, Diagonal 43

DIAGONAL – The Maroons trailed Mormon Trail by just six at halftime Tuesday, but struggled in the second half, getting outscored 54-13 in the final two quarters, falling 83-43.

Tyler Jarred scored 15 points for Diagonal while Kade Klommhaus had a double double with 13 points and 11 boards.

The Maroons shot just 14 of 51 from the floor in the loss.

Ankeny Christian Academy 90, Orient-Macksburg 19

ORIENT – Orient-Macksburg couldn’t fend off top-tier Ankeny Christian Academy program Tuesday in a 90-19 loss at home.

Dewayne Figgins was the Bulldogs leading scorer with seven points.

David Nelson put up a game-high 26 points for ACA while hitting three 3-pointers.
