Creston middle school basketball

7th boys

Creston seventh-grade boys defeated Harlan Monday, 43-26.

Tony Davidson scored 15 points for Creston, followed by Dylan Calvin with 11, Cael Turner eight, Sam Henry six and McCoy Haines three.

“Good road victory,” said Creston coach Mike McCabe. “We jumped out to a 29-11 halftime lead. We were unselfish on offense and really passed the ball well. We also handled their press very well and they eventually had to get out of it. We struggled a bit adjusting to some things on defense but got better. I would like us to close out quarters a bit better. We got a little sloppy and careless at times.”

Creston won the B game 41-25. Brady Burton scored 14 points followed by Dillon Starlin with eight, Dylan Hoepker six, Conner Wiley four, Anthony Eblen two and Tucker Rohrig two.

“Great effort in this game,” McCabe said. “I thought Dillon Starlin and Conner Wiley were wonderful at facilitating on offense. There was lots of playing time for all and lots of smiles on the court.”

Chris Chen scored two points for Creston in a 5-2 loss in a C quarter

8th grade boys

Harlan defeated the Creston eighth-grade boys Monday, 54-30, starting with a 16-5 first quarter.

Patrick Varner scored 17 points for Creston and Kyle Strider added 13. Strider had eight rebounds and Varner finished with four rebounds and two blocked shots.

“We did not play very well,” Creston coach Larry McNutt said. “Our passing was not good at all and we gave up too many layups primarily because our turnovers led to fast break opportunities for them. We will try and learn from this game and improve.”

Harlan also won the B game, 50-14. George Weis scored five points for Creston, followed by Payton Conley with four, Nolan Pryor three and Wyatt Montanye two.

“Turnovers led to many easy baskets for the opposition,” McNutt said. “I thought the kids kept battling but we just had trouble putting the ball in the basket.”

Creston won the C game 21-15. Kyle Stafford scored six points for Creston, followed by Willie Clayton five, Darren Wright four, Reese Glynn two, Logan McIntosh two and Jayson Shimer two. Stafford and Glynn each had two rebounds.

“This is the most points this group has ever scored,” McNutt said. “They were having fun and it was fun to see them get a win.”
