Creston drops two to Red Oak and Atlantic

Creston/O-M wrestling squared off in a double dual on Tuesday against Red Oak and Atlantic. With AHSTW not making the trip, Creston/O-M put its focus into picking up two important wins only to fall short in both matches.

Creston/O-M was able to jump on the board early with six points apiece form Beau Barnastle and Sam Chapman before falling behind by a wide margin.

Despite falling behind early, Panthers head coach Cody Downing wasn’t concerned.

“I was trying to figure out a way to move people around and give us some advantages today,” said Downing. “I thought we fought for every point, but fell into sticky situations.”

Garon Wurster broke the 24 straight points by Atlantic/CAM with a 5-2 decision win over Jaxson Bell, making the score 24-15.

Atlantic/CAM came right back with three straight match wins, with pins coming from Chase McLaren and Connor Pellett at 145 and 152, respectively.

Creston/O-M was able to end the match with back to back match victories from Hayden Green and Jackson Kinsella.

The match ended in a 40-27 score with Atlantic/CAM collecting its second win of the night.

In the second match, Creston/O-M once again found its way fighting to break even, dropping its first three matches starting at 195 pounds against Red Oak.

Going into Tuesday, Downing knew Red Oak would be a challenge with the Tigers sneaking into the top five as a team in Class 2A, according to

“I think it brought the best out of us. We had some kids step up,” said Downing.

Thomas Bentley, Colton Kinnison, and Liam Mahoney all ran off consecutive wins to push Red Oak ahead early before the comeback kids of Creston/O-M rallied their way back.

After getting on the board with a forfeit win for Justin Parsons at 106, the matchups fell in favor of the Tigers, winning six of their next eight matchups to pull ahead late in the night.

Kaden Bolton and Wurster were able to pin their opponents, with Beau Thompson getting a forfeit win and Hayden Green winning by tech fall.

Creston/O-M was able to close the gap but was unable to hold the lead, succumbing to a tie score as the final match concluded.

“Up by six in duels, we can’t give up pins and have people on our back,” said Downing. “We had chances to win that dual and I think the guys know that.”

The final score, determined by a technicality (most pins) ended up with Red Oak coming out on top. Creston/O-M had four pins to Red Oak’s five, leading to the loss.

“It’s never fun to lose at home but I think some people can see some promise tonight and something to grow from,” added Downing.

Despite the losses, Downing was very pleased with his boys.

“I am really pleased with the growth between Saturday and today (Tuesday) so if we can do that between now and Friday I’ll be happy.”

UP NEXT – Creston/O-M will participate in the Dan Christensen Invitational on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Leon.
